HTC Debuts 'Hero,' Third Google Android Smartphone

London - Smartphone maker HTC on Wednesday introduced its third handset model to run on Google's (NASD: GOOG) Android operating system, the HTC Hero, which will sport a customized user interface. Pricing was not provided for the device, which will first launch in Europe in July, and then in Asia later in the summer followed by a North American version slated for release later this year.

Bellevue, Wash. - Wireless carrier T-Mobile (NYSE: T) USA announced on Monday that it will launch the second smartphone to feature Google's (NASD: GOOG) Android operating system, the HTC myTouch, in the U.S. this summer with a $199 price tag. The device features a 3.2-inch touch screen, virtual keyboard and an upgradable 4GB microSD memory card, with consumers able to customize the applications on their phones via the Android Market.

Palm Names Jon Rubinstein as New CEO

Sunnyvale, Calif. - On the heels of its successful release of the Pre smartphone, Palm (NASD: PALM) on Wednesday announced that Jon Rubinstein will succeed Ed Colligan as CEO. Rubinstein, who became the company's executive chairman in late 2007, will assume the new role on Friday, also retaining his current title. Colligan, who has led the company for 16 years, plans to take some time off before joining Elevation Partners.

San Francisco - Kicking off its annual developers' conference in San Francisco, Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Monday introduced a new model of its popular iPhone, while dropping the price of its current model to as low as $99. The new iPhone 3G S, available in the U.S. June 19, features improved speed and battery life, a 3-megapixel auto-focus camera, video recording and hands-free voice control, as well as a new operating system that adds tools such as cut-and-paste, and the ability to send MMS multimedia text messages.

INQ Mobile to Release "Twitter Phone" in the Fall

Helsinki - INQ Mobile, a unit of Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa that makes mobile phones, said on Tuesday that it will introduce a mass-market "Twitter phone" in the fall, Reuters reported. The handset will connect to the Internet to let users send and view tweets. INQ previously released the INQ1, which was dubbed the "Facebook phone" for its mass-market appeal and integrated Facebook features.

Report: Ericsson Looking to Exit Sony Ericsson Joint Venture

Berlin - Sweden-based telecommunications firm Ericsson is looking into backing out of its Sony Ericsson joint venture, the German magazine Manager reported on Wednesday. According to the report, Sony (NYSE: SNE) has "expressed interest" in seeking out banks to help it purchase Ericsson's 50% stake in the company.

Cupertino, Calif. - Apple (NASD: AAPL) on Tuesday provided a sneak-peek at the upgrades coming this summer in the iPhone 3.0 software release, which will bring long-desired features like copy-and-paste of text, MMS multimedia messaging, and a search function that works across all applications. In addition to copy-and-paste and MMS, Apple will also introduce Spotlight for the iPhone, which will search through email, songs, text messages and other data on the device.

Best Buy Selling Refurbished iPhones at $50 Discount

Los Angeles - Media and electronics retail store chain Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) has begun selling refurbished Apple (NASD: AAPL) iPhone 3G models at a $50 discount, Reuters reported. The phones, returned by their original owners within 30 days of purchase, are available for $149 (8GB) or $249 (16GB) with a two-year AT&T contract. Wal-Mart also began selling the iPhone 3G a week ago, setting its prices at $197 (8GB) and $297 (16GB).
