London - Project Kangaroo, a TV video-on-demand joint venture proposed between U.K. broadcasters BBC, ITV and Channel 4 that was slated to launch in the fourth quarter, has seen its launch date delayed while the U.K. Competition Commission extends its probe of the service.

Santa Monica, Calif. - AOL's (NYSE: TW) Userplane social application platform division said on Tuesday that it has signed deals to power communication and community tools for network and cable TV partners The CW, Channel 4, Fuel TV and IFC. Userplane will provide the broadcasters' websites with customizable tools such as live instant messaging and chat.

Top U.K. Broadcasters Team on Web TV Joint Venture

London - Three U.K. broadcasters -- the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 -- on Tuesday announced plans to launch an online video-on-demand joint venture in 2008, codenamed "Kangaroo." The U.K. service will carry over 10,000 hours of current and archived TV programming, initially made available for streaming and downloading from the Web, both for free, and as rentals and paid downloads.

London - Disney-ABC International has signed a deal with U.K. broadcaster Channel 4, to offer free, ad-supported downloads of shows like "Ugly Betty" and "Desperate Housewives" on 4oD, Channel 4's online video-on-demand service, Variety reported. The deal, a first for Disney in Europe, will see programs remain available for up to 30 days following their original broadcasts.

San Diego - Entriq, a provider of video-on-demand delivery technology and services, announced on Monday that it will power U.K. broadcaster Channel 4's new online video-on-demand service. Channel 4 recently announced a deal with Disney to offer streaming episodes of ABC's "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" on its website, as well as through the video-on-demand service of U.K. cable TV firm ntl Telewest.

Channel 4 will offer two seasons of "Lost" in HD and the second season of "Desperate Housewives" on video-on-demand services from cable TV firm ntl/Telewest. The "Lost" episodes will also be available for 24-hour download via Windows Media Player from Channel 4's website. All episodes will cost 99 pence (about $1.25) each.
