The "XCD," developed by Aladdin, is an irregularly-shaped disc that contains a smart card which can be connected to a USB port, so that encrypted media on the disc could potentially only be accessed by confirming a license via USB.

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), the computer chipmaker and main competitor to Intel, said on Friday that its proposed $5.4 billion acquisition of Canadian graphics chipmaker ATI Technologies has been approved by the Minister of Industry under the Investment Canada Act, satisfying one of its conditions for closing. To secure the approval, AMD promised to increase the number of employees in research and development activities in Canada, as well as the amount it spends in R&D in the country. The deal, first announced in July, also on Friday received approval from ATI's shareholders. It is expected to close the week of Oct. 23.

Santa Clara, Calif. - Tvia, a chipmaker for next-generation digital televisions, said on Wednesday that a shareholder class action lawsuit filed against the company, alleging violations of federal securities laws, is without merit. Filed in U.S. District Court in Northern California, the shareholder suit seeks unspecified damages for those who purchased Tvia stock between Aug. 8, 2006 and Sept. 27, 2006, and alleges the company artificially inflated the market price of its shares. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Tvia said it will seek a dismissal of all charges. The company's shares plunged 57% in late September, after it cut its second quarter outlook to revenue of $300,000 to $400,000, down from first quarter revenue of $5.1 million. Tvia attributed the lowered projections to a shortage of LCD panels and other digital TV products.

Washington - The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), a video game industry trade group, on Thursday applauded a recent federal court decision in California that ordered makers of "mod chips" that allow game consoles to play pirated games to pay $9 million in damages. The Sept. 11 verdict from U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken said that a company called Divineo and several individuals violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) by trafficking in mod chips and HDLoaders, which allow copies of games to be downloaded directly onto a game console's hard drive.

The SEC is currently investigating over 80 technology firms' stock options grants, to determine if companies adjusted the date on which grants were issued to increase their values for employees. Milpitas, Calif. - Japanese electronics giant Toshiba said on Friday that it will team with Milpitas, Calif.-based SanDisk to build a new $5.2 billion flash memory plant in Japan. The companies have jointly operated a Japanese plant for the past year, but said that rapid growth in the flash memory market from the proliferation of products such as MP3 music players and mobile phones has necessitated a larger facility. The new facility, to be known as Fab 4, is expected to be operational by late 2007, with an initial capacity of 2,500 wafers a month. By late 2008, the companies said that the plant will be able to produce 67,500 wafers a month.
