Buzz Watch: Mike Volpi Confirmed as Joost's New CEO

Authored by Jay Baage on June 5, 2007 - 8:58am.
The rumors that DMW reported on May 31 that ex-Cisco crown prince Mike Volpi had been appointed CEO of Joost were confirmed by the company today. Volpi succeeds the company's founding CEO, Fredrik de Wahl, who remains at Joost as chief strategy officer. Volpi will assume full operational responsibility for the company effective immediately. So what conclusions can be drawn about Joost's strategy in the hot online video space from the appointment of a high-tech M&A expert that acquired more than 70 companies during his tenure at router-maker Cisco? Read my analysis from last week here. GigaOM also managed to get five questions with Volpi this morning that you can read here.

Analysis: Mike Volpi Would Make a Great Joost CEO, but Does He Know Content?

Authored by Jay Baage on May 31, 2007 - 3:20pm.
Mike Volpi, formerly known as the Crown Prince to John Chambers at router maker Cisco Systems, is reportedly joining the hyped web TV service Joost as Chief Executive Officer.  I interviewed Volpi when he was at Cisco and he made a strong impression as one of the smartest executives I’ve ever met. However, he comes from a tech background - as do Joost founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis - and I would have expected them to find someone who knows the ins and outs of Hollywood and the TV programming business to take Joost to the next level.

Camera Phone FameAs part of our upcoming Millennials Conference April 18th in LA we’re putting together a documentary about the generation loosely defined as ages 15-25 with Victorhouse Films.  We’ve noticed an interesting trend in our interview subjects, one that I’ve increasingly noticed in advertising as well: Millennials might be more motivated by fame than any preceding generation, and it’s not difficult to understand why.  It's just a click away.

Apple and Cisco: The Start of a Beautiful Friendship?

Authored by Kurt Scherf on February 23, 2007 - 11:36am.
Yesterday's announcement from Apple and Cisco regarding the resolution of the iPhone trademark is really short on specifics. Other than announcing that both companies can jointly use the trademark on their products, the only other public statement was that they would "explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, and consumer and enterprise communications."

Settled: Cisco and Apple May Share iPhone Name, But Everyone Knows its Apple’s

Authored by Scott Goldberg on February 22, 2007 - 5:41pm.
iPhone logo So the spat is settled: Cisco and Apple will share the iPhone name.  How adorable!  Did the naming rights negotiations and lawsuit threats ever mean anything?  Suppose Cisco had sued and won, or successfully negotiated exclusive rights to the title.  What then?  Would Apple have renamed its device the iMobile?  Or the iCell?  Not a chance.  We called it the iPhone long before Steve Jobs held a meeting in the Bat Cave to send his minions scrambling to make one.  As for the Cisco phone?  Well, we call it just that: the Cisco phone, and we always will.  So what if they managed to keep the iPhone name?  Will anyone outside of Cisco ever call it an iPhone?  No, never.

The iPhone Controversy and Apple's Big Brand Challenge

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on January 11, 2007 - 10:01am.
Every news media outlet and just about every blog in the universe is buzzing about Apple's big iPhone announcement Monday at MacWorld.  It has been a busy few days of announcements with CES, MacWorld and the Detroit Auto Show all happening this week and fighting for the headlines.  As it turns out, the real headline grabber has been the rising battle between Cisco and Apple over the rights to the trademark iPhone name.

Despite it's perfect consistency with the rest of Apple's product line, it turns out the branded trademark "iPhone" actually belonged to Cisco since 2000, and they are also promoting a smart portfolio of products bearing the same name that quietly focus on reinventing the home telephone to include some of the features available in mobile phones.  In a blog post about Apple's move of announcing their own iPhone, Cisco offers a thoughtful response painting Apple as the spoiled child who tried to get the name they wanted, couldn't reach an agreement in time, and decided to move ahead with announcing the name anyway.
