Sprint Nextel, Clearwire Form $14.5 Billion WiMax Company

Reston, Va. - Following months of negotiations, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) said on Wednesday that it will combine its WiMax business with that of Clearwire. The resulting $14.5 billion company, which will retain the name Clearwire, will focus on deploying the first nationwide mobile WiMAX network, which promises wireless speeds comparable to those of broadband. The companies also said they have landed $3.2 billion in investments toward the project from Intel Capital, Google (NASD: GOOG), Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWX) and Bright House Networks.

Reston, Va. - Needing at least $3 billion to roll out its nationwide high speed WiMax network, Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) and partner Clearwire are now in talks with cable giant Comcast (NASD: CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

Reston, Va. - Unable to agree on the final terms of a deal, wireless giant Sprint Nextel said on Friday that it has scrapped its plan to jointly build its nationwide high-speed WiMax network with telecommunications firm Clearwire.

ICO to Team with Clearwire on Mobile Video Trial

Raleigh, N.C. - ICO Global Communications, a Virginia-based provider of satellite communications services, said on Monday that it will team with Kirkland, Wash.-based broadband firm Clearwire to launch one of the industry's first mobile video trials. The joint trial is expected to begin early next year in Raleigh, N.C., with ICO also planning a similar trial in Las Vegas. Clearwire was founded in 2003 by Craig McCaw, the wireless communications pioneer behind such companies as Nextel and XO Communications. The company also is working with Sprint Nextel to build a nationwide WiMax network.

DirecTV, EchoStar to Offer High-Speed Internet Through Clearwire

Kirkland, Wash. - Clearwire, the operator of a wireless, high-speed Internet access service, announced on Thursday that it has signed agreements with the nation's two satellite TV broadcasters -- DirecTV and EchoStar Communications, which operates the DISH Network -- that will enable the satellite firms to offer high-speed Internet access to their subscribers.
