Los Angeles – Nintendo has chosen IGN Entertainment’s GameSpy, a unit of Fox Interactive Media, as the provider of its multiplayer technology to publishers developing games for the Wii, according to a press release. GameSpy’s technology will enable community features such as friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities, and comprehensive rankings data.

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Hoping to expand its business into new markets, There Inc., a developer of technology that enables thousands of Internet users to communicate and interact in a 3D virtual environment, said on Tuesday that it has changed its name to Forterra Systems and raised $14 million in new funding. Jerusalem Venture Partners led the round, with previous investors Sutter Hill Ventures and Chichen-Itza Ventures also participating. Forterra now plans to expand its focus from operating consumer online services to providing virtual technologies to government, industry, education and consumer entertainment companies. Forterra currently has a contract with the U.S. Army to develop a new training application based on the technology. The company has appointed Robert Gehorsam, the vice president of strategic initiatives at There, as its new CEO.

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Friendster, an online community network that links friends and friends of friends for dating and general networking purposes, has raised $13 million in new financing. A spokeswoman for Benchmark Capital confirmed that the venture capital firm co-led the round along with Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfield & Byers; Battery Ventures also participated. Founded in 2002 by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jonathan Abrams, the site now boasts nearly two million members for its service, which is currently free to use. The San Jose Mercury News recently reported that Friendster had turned down a $30 million acquisition offer from search engine giant Google, which it said was less than the reported $53 million valuation set by Benchmark and Kleiner Perkins.
