Sony, Cable Co.'s Ink Deal for Set-top Box-Free Cable TV

Washington - Sony Electronics (NYSE: SNE) and six major U.S. cable TV providers have announced an agreement that will enable Sony to develop and sell televisions able to connect directly to cable TV services without the need of a set-top box. The agreement between Sony and cable providers Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Cox, Charter (NASD: CHTR), Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) and Bright House Networks -- which collectively serve 82% of U.S. cable subscribers -- will allow "two-way" digital TVs and other devices to deliver both standard cable programming and interactive services like pay-per-view and video-on-demand.

Washington - Following news this week that broadband ISP Charter Communications (NASD: CHTR) was planning to begin tracking its subscribers' Web surfing habits in order to serve them targeted ads, two prominent U.S. lawmakers have called on the company to delay the move, as it may violate federal privacy laws, CNET News.com reported.

Los Angeles - Charter Communications (NASD: CHTR), a provider of cable TV services that also counts 2.7 million high-speed Internet customers, plans to test a targeted advertising system that would track some of its subscribers' Web surfing in order to serve them more tailored ads, according to BroadbandReports. The company has partnered with NebuAD to build subscriber behavioral profiles and then sell them to third-party ad networks.

Los Angeles - Charter Communications, the nation's third-largest cable TV provider, announced on Monday a long-term agreement with Gemstar-TV Guide International. Under the deal, Charter will deploy Gemstar's i-Guide interactive program guide to its digital cable subscribers, as well as add Gemstar's TV Guide Channel, TVG Network and TV Guide Spot to its channel offerings.

AOL Forges High-Speed Partnership with Charter

Dulles, Va. - Days after announcing several partnerships with several other providers, America Online on Thursday said that it has teamed with St. Louis-based Charter Communications to bundle AOL's service with Charter's high-speed Internet access. Beginning Feb. 6, AOL members in Charter's territory will be able to sign up for the new combined offering, which will cost $25.90 a month. Last week, AOL also announced similar alliances with BellSouth, Time Warner Cable and Verizon. AOL said that it plans to launch a nationwide ad campaign encouraging members to upgrade from dial-up to broadband. Over the past few years, AOL has lost several million dial-up subscribers to either broadband providers or less expensive dial-up firms.

Pleasanton, Calif. - Arroyo Video Solutions, a provider of video-on-demand delivery software, announced on Monday that it has signed an agreement to provide its software to cable TV provider Charter Communications, for a rollout of video-on-demand with subscribers in Alcoa, Tennessee. Pleasanton, Calif.-based Arroyo also provides video-on-demand software for Comcast and Time Warner Cable.

Kirkland, Wash. - Digeo, a maker of networked digital video recorders, announced that its Moxi Media Center devices have now been deployed to more than 100,000 Charter digital cable subscribers. Kirkland, Wash.-based Digeo's Moxi set-top is now available to 85% of Charter's 2.7 million digital cable TV subscribers.

MLB to Stream Games for Comcast, Charter, Cablevision Broadband Subscribers

New York -- Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) announced on Thursday a deal with top cable TV providers Comcast, Charter and Cablevision, to offer broadband coverage of baseball games to their high-speed Internet subscribers. The MLB.com All-Access service will allow subscribers to access live and archived video and audio of every game played, in addition to searchable video clips, customizable highlights, and a library of vintage broadcasts. Under the deal, Cablevision, Charter and Comcast will each pay MLBAM a wholesale fee for every new subscriber. The cable firms will offer promotions such as a free season-long subscription to the service for new broadband customers, and a 20% discount on the $100 service to existing subscribers.
