Panasonic Introduces $799 Portable Blu-ray Player

Secaucus, N.J. - Japanese electronics firm Panasonic (NYSE: PC) on Monday introduced what it says is the first portable Blu-ray Disc player, the $799 DMP-B15. The device features an 8.9-inch WSVGA LCD screen, VIERA CAST Internet accessibility, BD Live functionality and a SD Memory Card slot. With the Internet support, the device can access content from sources including YouTube, Amazon Video-on-Demand, Picasa Web Albums and Bloomberg.

The annual CEDIA Expo has been underway in Denver this week, where consumer electronics manufacturers were unveiling their newest top-of-line hardware for an audience of custom home theater installers. This year's show was heavy on (very) high-end Blu-ray Disc players from Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, JVC and others (not much for the Wal-Mart crowd there). But it also featured hardware makers' first substantial forays into Internet-enabled TV sets, which are designed to serve as their own bridge between the Web-delivered video and the big-screen TV in the living room without the need of a separate set-top box or PC.

Japan's Matsushita to Change Name to Panasonic, Unify Brands

Tokyo - Japanese electronics giant Matsushita (NYSE: MC) announced on Thursday that it will change its official company name to Panasonic, the brand name its products are known by in the U.S. and elsewhere outside of Japan. The company had been using the Matsushita name -- after founder Konosuke Matsushita -- since 1935. All Matsushita products, including those sold under the National brand in Japan, will be labeled Panasonic by the end of 2010.

Panasonic Web-ready HDTV to Feature Picasa, YouTube Access

Las Vegas - Consumer electronics firm Panasonic said on Tuesday that its new VIERA line of Internet-connected plasma televisions will come equipped with integrated access to Google's Picasa Web Albums online photo-sharing service, as well as videos from YouTube. The first generation of the devices is slated to ship in the spring.

Las Vegas - Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), the nation's largest cable TV provider, announced on Monday that it has partnered with electronics maker Panasonic, part of Japan's Matsushita (NYSE: MC), to develop a portable digital video recorder (DVR) and DVD player that can record programming from both Comcast and other cable TV providers. The AnyPlay device sports an 8.5-inch display, features 60 hours of recording capacity, and is currently slated for release in early 2009.

"Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour" Promotion Coming to U.S. Malls

Burbank, Calif. - The Walt Disney Studios said this week that it has partnered with Panasonic on "Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour," a promotion for the next-generation DVD format that will bring interactive kiosks to 18 U.S. shopping malls between August and December. Consumers will be able to view HD editions of Disney and Pixar films, as well as demo interactive games included on Blu-ray discs.

Panasonic Establishes Blu-ray Testing Center in Hollywood

Secaucus, N.J. - Japan's Matsushita (Panasonic) announced on Friday that its North American subsidiary will establish a Panasonic Hollywood Blu-ray Testing Center. "Until now there has been no testing service available for content verification before disc replication although many in the motion picture industry expressed the need for a testing center to provide such services, especially in the Hollywood area," the company said. The center will offer content providers and authoring studios services including format verification service for the logical format of Blu-ray discs; playback testing service; and rental site service for format verification and playback testing.

Tokyo - Japan's Matsushita (Panasonic) and Sony on Thursday announced that they have jointly developed a new HD digital video camera recorder format that captures images onto 8cm DVD discs. The AVCHD format uses the MPEG-4/H.264 codec to compress video recorded in 1080i or 720p high-definition signals. The two companies have started preparations for licensing the new format throughout the industry.

Los Angeles - Gemstar-TV Guide International, a provider of electronic program guides for digital TV services, announced on Wednesday that it has signed a licensing agreement with Japan's Matsushita, known in the U.S. as Panasonic. Los Angeles -- Gemstar-TV Guide International, a provider of electronic program guides for digital television services, announced on Monday that Sony has signed a multi-year agreement to license Gemstar's on-screen interactive program guide for its digital TVs, DVD recorders and set-top boxes sold in the U.S. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sony has already licensed Gemstar's program guide for use in Japan. Los Angeles-based Gemstar also announced that consumer electronics firm Panasonic (Matsushita) has expanded its license agreement with Gemstar to include the use of its program guides in Europe; Panasonic also uses Gemstar guides in its consumer electronics sold in the U.S. and Japan. Other Gemstar licensees include JVC, LG/Zenith, Mitsubishi, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Thomson, TiVo and Toshiba.
