USA Today Integrates Headline Search Into AIM

McLean, Va. - USA Today said on Wednesday that it has launched a new tool that will let readers use AOL's AIM instant messenger to search current and archived headlines and set up news alerts. Once logged into AIM, users can add "USA TODAY" to their buddy lists. They can then type key words into the dialogue box, and receive a return IM when the paper publishes articles containing those words. Readers also can use the service to browse and search headlines.

Bebo Social Network to Integrate AOL's AIM Messenger Service

Dulles, Va. - AOL said on Thursday that it has signed a deal with U.K.-based social network Bebo, to offer its AIM instant messenger service to Bebo users. An AIM icon will now automatically appear on the profiles of 38 million Bebo users, and will indicate whether the use is signed on to AIM and available to chat.

AOL Releases New E-mail, Instant Messaging Products

Dulles, Va. - AOL said on Thursday that it has released a test version of its free, Web-based e-mail service integrated with the AIM instant messenger, allowing users to simultaneously email and IM from the same screen.

Web-based Instant Messenger Service Meebo Raises $9 Million

Mountain View, Calif. - Meebo, a provider of a Web-based instant messaging service, announced on Thursday that it has raised $9 million in its second round of venture capital financing, led by new investor Draper Fisher Jurvetson and existing shareholder Sequoia Capital.

Bertelsmann's Arvato Licenses AIM Catalog for P2P Distribution

Berlin - Arvato Mobile, a unit of German media conglomerate Bertelsmann that distributes mobile entertainment content, announced on Thursday that it has signed a licensing agreement with the Association of Independent Music (AIM), which represents over 900 record labels. Under the deal, AIM's catalog will be made available as digital downloads through Gnab, a licensed peer-to-peer distribution network, with deals for subscriptions and video downloads expected to follow shortly.

AOL Launches Free IM Telephone Service

Dulles, Va. - Two weeks after first leaking the news, AOL on Tuesday officially launched a new service that will allow the 41 million users of its instant messenger to receive free incoming calls through their computers. Through its new AIM Phoneline service, the company said that IM users will be able to get free, local phone numbers to receive the calls, as well as free online voicemail. The company is offering an upgraded service, which allows users to make calls to anyone in the U.S. or 30 other countries, for $14.90 a month. "Our research shows that the need for a separate and confidential phone number is becoming as important to consumers as the need for multiple email addresses," said John McKinley, the president of AOL Digital Services.

Doppleganger, AOL Launch Virtual Music Lounge for Teens

San Francisco - Doppleganger, a San Francisco-based developer of online community technology where users communicate using avatars and instant messaging, announced on Monday a partnership with AOL to integrate AIM into its online lounge. Designed for teens, The Lounge lets users create avatars to communicate with friends on their buddy lists in an environment with streaming music, video screens and virtual DJ booths. Doppleganger additionally announced a partnership with Interscope Records, and will promote Interscope recording artists the Pussycat Dolls to users of The Lounge.

Dulles, Va. - Hoping to build on the popularity of its instant messaging service, AOL is planning to add a bold new feature later this month that will allow its 41 million IM users to receive free incoming calls through their computers, The New York Times reported on Friday. Under the plan, users of the company's AIM instant messenger will be able to sign up for a free phone number to receive calls through a new service known as AIM Phoneline. AOL also reportedly will offer an upgraded service allowing them to make calls to anyone in the U.S. or 30 other countries for $14.90 a month. Both services are expected to be launched on May 16. Separately, The Times said that AOL also is planning to introduce AIM Pages, its answer to social networking phenomenon MySpace.

U.K. Indie Labels License Music to China's SINA.com

London - The U.K. Association of Independent Music (AIM), a collection of independent record labels, has signed an online distribution agreement with Chinese Web portal SINA.com, the BBC Online reported. The deal -- which will bring no profits to the labels -- will make free streaming music and music video clips available to SINA.com visitors. AIM told the BBC it plans to vet all tracks offered for sex and drug references.

Napster Licenses AIM U.K. Indie Labels for Download Store

Los Angeles -- Napster, the digital music service unit of Roxio, announced on Wednesday that it has signed a worldwide distribution agreement with the Association of Independent Music (AIM), a consortium of U.K. independent record labels. Initially, 50,000 tracks from 50 of AIM's 800 member labels will be available on Napster, when it launches in the U.K. this summer. Rival Apple also plans to launch a U.K. version of its iTunes Store in the coming months.
