MySpace Lets Users Share Profile Data on Yahoo, Twitter, eBay

Los Angeles - News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace has announced the launch of a new "Data Availability" initiative, which will allow users to share their public profile data on third-party websites of their choosing, including Yahoo (NASD: YHOO), eBay, Photobucket and Twitter. The idea is to eliminate the need to update personal information across many websites, and instead use MySpace for updating, to include basic profile information, friend networks, photos, blog posts and videos.

EFF Supports eBay Seller in Promo CD Resale Lawsuit

Los Angeles - Digital civil liberties group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) earlier this week filed a brief on behalf of an eBay seller who was sued by Universal Music Group for reselling promotional CDs, arguing that the record label is violating copyright law's "first sale" doctrine.

There was no shortage of news for the week of Jan. 21-25. The biggest story: The Federal Reserve lowered the benchmark federal funds rate by three-quarters of a percentage point to 3.5%, its lowest level since September 2005, but the Fed’s actions couldn’t stop an already shaky stock market from continuing its downward spiral. After a sharp mid-week increase on news of the rate cut, the DMW100 ended slightly lower on the week.

eBay's Meg Whitman Makes it Official; Stepping Down March 31

San Jose, Calif. - Days after reports surfaced that she would retire, Meg Whitman, the president and CEO of eBay (NASD: EBAY), made it official, saying that she plans to step down on March 31. She will be replaced by John Donahoe, who joined eBay in 2005 following six years as the worldwide managing director of Bain & Company.

Report: 1.3 Million Game Consoles Bought, Sold on eBay in 2006

Rockville, Md. - More than 1.3 million video game consoles were bought and sold on eBay in 2006, to the tune of $330 million, according to a report from market research firm Packaged Facts.

London - Artist management firms representing more than 400 performing artists, including Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and KT Tunstall, have joined together to try to secure artists a share of secondary online concert ticket sales. The Resale Rights Society (RRS) is targeting companies such as eBay, Viagogo and Seat Exchange, which generate an estimated more than $400 million annually in secondary ticket sales in the U.K.

LiveWorld to Power Social Sub-Networks for eBay, Sports League

San Jose, Calif. - LiveWorld (NASD: LVWD), a social marketing agency, said on Tuesday that eBay and an unnamed national sports league are the first clients for SuperGroups Community, its service that lets members of an online community create their own public and private sub-communities. Applications and moderation services include profiles, forums, blogs, photos, user video, customer support forums and groups.

Oops, I just ran over that guy's foot!Let's leave out the "Oops, she did it again!" quips this one time.  It's simply too easy.  Not to mention the whole Britney-ran-over-a-paparrazo's-foot thing was waiting to happen anyway.  Now the TMZ photographer has put the sock on eBay with a posting that reads, "Authentic sock Britney ran over. The actual sock worn by a TMZ cameraman Thursday when Brit drove over his foot. Tire tread guaranteed authentic!"

EBay Launches "Neighborhoods" Social Networking Service

San Jose, Calif. - Online auction giant eBay on Wednesday announced the launch of a new social networking feature, eBay Neighborhoods, that allows eBay users to join one of some 600 online communities that feature message boards, product reviews, photos and social mapping.

Miley Cyrus is putting on one of the most successful tours of all timeArkansas - Five ticket-sales sites could be in violation of state ticket-scalping laws pertaining to the sale of seats for Miley Cyrus concerts, reports the Associated Press.  Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has demanded to see documents from the sites.  He also believes fake tickets are being listed on sites to gauge value.  One ticket for a Charlotte, North Carolina show was scalped for $2,565.

Prince believes YouTube and eBay are ruining his careerIn the Wild West that is the internet in 2007, Prince has hired the sheriff – the Web Sheriff, that is, a British-based web pirate-hunting company – to punish those who have wrongfully profited from his work.  Prince (or The Artist Formerly Known as Prince) will file a suit in the US and UK, and has hired a Swedish law firm to take action against YouTube, eBay, and The Pirate Bay, a BitTorrent tracking site.

Skype Adds Online Video-Sharing to Internet Telephone Service

Luxembourg - Skype, the Internet telephone service unit of eBay, on Tuesday added the ability to share online video in their Skype chats, and add videos downloaded from Dailymotion and Metacafe to their Skype "moods," the name for a Skype user's online profile.

Poor newspapers. Their cash cow service, classified ads, is probably about to break a record for facing more competition from free services than any other in the history of paid services. Faceboook recently piled on to the Craigslist disruption of the newspaper classified market with a free classifieds marketplace. SIIA Settles Suit Against Individual Selling Pirated Software on eBay

Washington - The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade group for the software and digital content industry, said that it has settled a software piracy suit on behalf of member Symantec for $205,000. The organization filed suit after the defendant attempted to sell unauthorized Symantec software on eBay.

If eBay's Media Exchange Flops, What Does it Mean For the Networks and Google?

Cable TV networks like Turner Networks, Discovery, Lifetime and ESPN have decided to boycott an online exchange designed by eBay to sell advertising time, according to the Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau, a trade group in New York. Without the participation of cable networks, the eBay exchange will have no air time to sell to advertisers. This poses a crucial question for media executives to ponder, if at all, companies like Google will be able to penetrate offline media such as print, radio, and television?
