London - As News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace looks to rebrand itself as more of a social entertainment destination, the company is in negotiations with rival Facebook on sharing content between the two sites, London's Telegraph reports. "Facebook is focusing on building the best technology which helps people share content, while at MySpace they are focusing on more a content-led strategy. We would like to have their content, as we already do with many other sites, shared across our network because it is good for our users," Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg told the Telegraph.

Mountain View, Calif. - Shortly after Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) announced a similar deal, Google (NASD: GOOG) yesterday said that it had signed a deal with Twitter, to include real-time status updates in its search results. "We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data, and we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months," Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president of search products and user experience, wrote in a blog post.

Users Spend 8 Billion Minutes on Facebook Daily

San Francisco - Facebook's over 300 million users spend over 8 billion minutes on the site every day, Mark Schroepfer, the company's vice president of engineering, said at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco on Wednesday, CNET News.com reported. Schroepfer also said that Facebook users share 2 billion pieces of content each week, while 2 billion photos are uploaded each month.

Microsoft to Add Facebook, Twitter Data to Bing Search Results

San Francisco - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) announced on Wednesday that it has signed separate deals with Facebook and Twitter, to bring real-time status updates from the services to its Bing search engine. While financial terms of the nonexclusive agreements were not disclosed,  PaidContent cited earlier reports pegging Twitter's take as "several million dollars," in addition to a share of ad revenue.

New York - Facebook accounted for 59% of all U.S. social network site visits in September, an increase of 194% from the 19% of site visits that Facebook attracted a year ago, according to data from Internet measurement firm Hitwise. MySpace received the second-highest percentage of traffic among social network sites in September, with 30.2% -- a plunge from the 67% of all traffic it drew a year ago.

Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook announced on Tuesday that it has forged a multi-year partnership with ratings firm Nielsen, that will see the companies work to help marketers better use Facebook and gain insights from their campaigns. The first product of the collaboration, Nielsen BrandLift, allows advertisers to serve opt-in polls on Facebook's homepage -- to measure consumer attitudes and purchase intent from display advertising that has appeared on the site.

MySpace Syncs Status Updates with Twitter

Last week I attended the Internet Marketing Conference in Vancouver, Canada. I figured that I would share some notes from there regarding Social Media Marketing in particular, since that is the field of marketing that, in my opinion, is evolving the fastest. First there is the issue of terminology. Everyone, including myself, tend to talk about social media marketing, but I guess one takeaway from the conference is that we're really talking about social marketing. As Louise Clements, Director of Sales, Facebook Canada points out, Facebook is NOT a media company.

Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook now counts 300 million users worldwide, and became cash flow positive in its last financial quarter, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in a blog post on Tuesday. "We thank all of you for helping us reach the point where we are connecting 300 million people, and we hope to serve you and many more people in increasingly deep and innovative ways in the months and years ahead," Zuckerberg wrote.

TechCrunch Punk'd by Facebook with Fake News Story

Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook had some fun with technology news blog TechCrunch this week, planting the seeds for a fake story about a new "Fax This Photo" feature on the Facebook account of reporter Jason Kincaid. Some 20 minutes after noticing the actually-working feature -- which Facebook had posted only to Kincaid's account -- and emailing a query to Facebook, Kincaid posted a story entitled "Facebook Now Lets You Fax Your Photos. I Have No Idea Why Anyone Would Want To Do This." Facebook's Jaime Schopflin eventually revealed the prank to Kincaid. "They were placing bets around the office on how long before we noticed it and posted. And something else about teaching us to contact them before posting," Kincaid wrote.

Facebook to Allow Tagging of Friends in Status Updates

New York - Facebook is set to begin allowing users to "tag" their friends in their status updates, a feature already provided for photos, videos and notes, the Associated Press reported. Set to launch in coming weeks, the feature will see users type the "at" symbol inside the status box, and then pick from a drop-down menu list of friends -- as well as pages, events, groups and applications -- to tag in their status update.

Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook this week began rolling out Facebook Lite, a new, more streamlined version of the service aimed at emerging markets where users typically have slower Internet connections. The service -- which is free from applications and serves up 'notably fewer ads', according to VentureBeat -- lets users write on walls, post photos and video, and browse profiles.
