IFC Inks Deal to Distribute Indie Films on Netflix

New York - IFC Entertainment has signed a deal with online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX), to distribute 53 independent films on the service, Variety reports. The deal includes "The Thin Blue Line," "Return of the Secaucus Seven" and "Following."  IFC's catalog is also available via iTunes, Blockbuster and Amazon.

Saratoga, Calif. - Roku, a maker of Internet-connected set-top boxes, on Tuesday introduced two new HD-capable models, and new pricing for its standard model. The $99 Roku HD player and $129 Roku HD-XR support HD-quality video and audio, while the standard model Roku SD player will now sell for $79.The devices can deliver content directly from partners including Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand and MLB.TV.

New York - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) hopes to expand its reach beyond Microsoft's (NASD: MSFT) Xbox 360 to offer content streaming on the Wii, PlayStation 3 and other capable devices, Reuters reports. CEO Reed Hastings reiterated for Reuters that the company's current deal with Microsoft for the feature is exclusive. Hastings added that he'd like to see Netflix on the iPhone, but that is "likely to come over time."

New York - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) on Monday doled out its $1 million Netflix Prize to a group of engineers and researchers who were able to improve the accuracy of the company's movie recommendation system by 10%. The team "BellKor's Pragmatic Chaos," consisting of three teams that had previously competed against one another, was awarded the $1 million prize offered by the contest, which Netflix launched in 2006.

Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) claims to have an exclusive relationship among console vendors with Netflix, whose subscribers can stream TV episodes and movies to their Xbox 360 video game consoles, Engadget reported. Netflix had been rumored to be in talks to expand streaming to Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii, but Nintendo in a station claimed that "Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience."

Report: Netflix Developing iPhone Streaming Application

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) is developing a video streaming application for Apple's (NASD: AAPL) iPhone, Mutichannel News reported, citing an industry executive familiar with the company's plans. It's unclear whether AT&T and Apple would approve over-the-network streaming of full-length TV episodes and movies, given previous crippling of services like the SlingPlayer, or restrict it to Wi-Fi connections. Wired.com noted that a Netflix iPhone application could possibly take advantage of the content caching ability seen on recent mobile applications from Slacker and Spotify.

Netflix Adds Streaming Episodes of ABC's "Lost," Other Series

Los Gatos, Calif. - Netflix (NASD: NFLX), developer of an online DVD rental service with more than 10 million subscribers, said on Monday that it has signed a deal with Disney-ABC Television Group (NYSE: DIS) that will make several of ABC's series available to be streamed instantly from Netflix. In its entirety, the deal will allow Netflix members to instantly watch the first five seasons of "Lost," seasons four and five of "Desperate Housewives," season five of "Grey's Anatomy" and seasons one and two of "Legend of the Seeker."

Netflix Profit Climbs 22%, Subscribers Up 26% in Q2

Los Gatos, Calif. - Online DVD rental service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) announced this week that it added 289,000 new subscribers during the second quarter, a 26% increase year-over-year, and now counts 10.6 million subscribers. The company reported $408.5 million in revenue, up 21% from a year ago but just shy of the $409 million projected by analysts.

Sony Adds Netflix Streaming to Bravia Net-Connected TVs

San Diego - Sony (NYSE: SNE) Electronics said this week that it has added the ability for owners of its Bravia line of Internet-connected televisions to access Netflix's (NASD: NFLX) on-demand streaming service. Netflix subscribers will be able to stream over 12,000 movies and TV episodes directly to their TVs. The Bravia network also offers content from Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, Daily Motion, Sports Illustrated and elsewhere.
