Yahoo Consortia Working on Used Cars Portal

The newspaper consortia (“the amigos”) that teamed up with Yahoo for HotJobs is planning to invade used autos next, according to a post by newspaper insider Ken Doctor. If it pans out, such an alliance would probably signal that Yahoo’s 2005 deal with AutoTrader for listings will soon be over.

Even as Yahoo pushes hard to fully partner with newspapers online, Google has taken a different tack, offering to sell advertising for newspapers...in print. The Google Print Ads program began in June 2005 with magazines to decidedly mixed results. It moved to include 100 newspapers in late 2006.

Mountain View, Calif. - In what has become a quarterly ritual, Google on Wednesday again surpassed analyst expectations by posting a fourth quarter profit that nearly tripled its figure from a year ago.

More Reverberations on Ad Network Planned by Newspaper Giants

There’s been more industry feedback on the “Open Network” for national advertising that Gannett, McClatchy and Tribune (GMT) have proposed to launch for the newspaper industry. The first question is: who leaked it to reporter Julia Angwin and why? There is some feeling that the leak didn’t come from GMT, and in fact, probably came from some other party that wanted to sabotage the network before it really got started.

Angwin got a great scoop, and wrote a great piece, but I wonder whether her suggestion that Gannett Digital Media head Jack Williams was thinking in terms of illegal antitrust collusion was really warranted. The article states:

Alexandria, Va. - The three-month-old fraud trial of two former AOL executives may be nearing an end, The Washington Post reported on Friday. Federal prosecutors wrapped up their case against former business affairs executive Kent Wakeford and former unit vice president John Tuli on Thursday after parading more than three dozen witnesses to the stand.

EarthLink CEO Garry Betty Dies of Cancer at Age 49

Atlanta – Gary Betty, CEO of EarthLink, who joined the company in 1996 and helped grow it from a small regional, Internet service provider into one of the largest ISPs in the country, has died of cancer at the age of 49. Betty took a leave of absence in November after being diagnosed with a serious form of cancer.

Yahoo News Expands Video Content Deal With ABC News

Santa Monica, Calif. - Yahoo News announced on Wednesday that it has expanded a video content agreement with ABC News, increasing the amount and visibility of ABC News video available on Yahoo News. Under the deal, ABC News will provide Yahoo with expanded daily video content packages, as well as additional segments from programs like "Good Morning America."

AOL Creates Co-Branded Site With Major League Gaming

Dulles, Va. - AOL said on Tuesday that it has launched a co-branded site with Major League Gaming (MLG), a professional video game league.  The site, which will be part of AOL's Gamedaily site, will feature MLG's professional gaming content, including streaming video highlights, pro player profiles, blogs and online tournaments.

NFL Quarterback Tom Brady Sues Yahoo Over Use of Image

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Tom Brady, the quarterback of the NFL's New England Patriots, is suing Yahoo, claiming that the Internet company used his image without his consent in ads for its fantasy football service, Reuters reported on Friday. Brady is seeking an injunction to prevent Yahoo from continuing to run the ads, as well as unspecified monetary damages.
