Judge Denies Akamai Injunction Against Limelight in Patent Case

Tempe, Ariz. - Content delivery network Limelight Networks (NASD: LLWN) said on Wednesday that a federal court has denied rival Akamai Technologies' (NASD: AKAM) request for a permanent injunction against the company, which a jury previously ruled has infringed Akamai's patents.

Red Swoosh Debuts BitTorrent Client for Firefox Browser

Cambridge, Mass. - Red Swoosh, a provider of content delivery technology that was acquired by Akamai several weeks ago, has released a BitTorrent file-sharing client for the Mozilla Firefox browser, TechCrunch reported. FoxTorrent allows users manage torrents and download various media files from the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing network, as well as stream files as they are downloading.

Akamai Debuts Net Usage Index for Digital Music Websites

Cambridge, Mass. - Akamai, a provider of content network delivery services, on Monday announced the launch of a service that tracks global Web usage patterns of visitors to more than 40 digital music websites. The Akamai Net Usage Index for Digital Music measures traffic to music download sites, music destination sites, and live radio broadcast services like XM Satellite Radio, Clear Channel, MTV and Napster. Data collected from the Index over the past three months shows that North America, Asia and Europe represent the bulk of visitor traffic to these sites, which at peak times each day count more than half a million visitors per minute.

Sarnoff, President of Random House’s Corporate Development Group, a division of Bertelsmann, will remain in the company’s New York headquarters, reporting to Bertelsmann CFO Thomas Rabe, and will retain his responsibilities within Random House.

Cambridge, Mass. - Akamai Technologies, a provider of Internet content delivery services, has raised $208 million in a secondary public offering of stock. The company sold 12 million shares at a price of $17.34 a share. Shares in Akamai were down $0.70 at $16.64 in the final hour of trading on Tuesday, a loss of about 4%.

Akamai to Speed Content on Clear Channel Radio Station Websites

New York - Clear Channel Radio, which owns or operators more than 1,200 U.S. radio stations, announced on Tuesday that Akamai Technologies will provide content delivery network services, speeding delivery of content from Clear Channel's 1,200 radio station websites to users. Clear Channel said that 400 of the sites are streaming live simulcasts, adding that its online audience now numbers 8 million listeners per month.

Rediff.com, Akamai Partner on First Digital Music Store in India

Cambridge, Mass. - Rediff.com, a provider of online news, information, communication and entertainment services in India, announced on Monday that it has partnered with U.S. content delivery network firm Akamai to launch the first online digital music store in India. The digital retail site will use Akamai's technology to enable secure downloads, along with Rediff's e-commerce payment gateway. The company said Indian singer Sanjay Maroo was the first to create an online music download site using Rediff.com's new music store portal.

Akamai to Measure Worldwide Popularity of News Stories in Real-Time

Cambridge, Mass. -- Akamai Technologies, a content delivery network that speeds the delivery of 15% of all global Internet traffic, this week introduced a service that aims to map the relative significance of news stories online by tabulating their popularity on 100 news sites in real-time. The Akamai Net Usage Index for News will gauge total visitors per minute to popular news sites in six global regions, and catalog the interest in particular stories by the minute, day, month, quarter and year. "When you can get down to the minute of a day and correlate spikes in news site traffic, you can really begin to see what was going on at that moment," Akamai CEO Paul Sagan told Reuters. The index shows that the most popular stores of late have been the London subway bombings; Hurricane Emily; the Space Shuttle mission and Indian monsoon; and the Michael Jackson verdict.

Cambridge, Mass. -- Content delivery network Akamai Technologies announced on Wednesday that it has acquired rival Speedera Networks, in an all-stock transaction valued at about $130 million. Massachusetts-based Akamai expects the purchase to enable it to better compete against larger managed service providers, as well as offer a broader range of services to its customers. Both companies provide technology that speeds the delivery of content across the Internet, such as software applications, Web ads and online video. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2005.

Akamai to Distribute Streaming Content for Major League Baseball

Cambridge, Mass. -- Content delivery network services provider Akamai Technologies announced that Major League Baseball Advanced Media has signed a multi-year agreement with the company to provide distribution the streaming audio and video feeds of baseball games on the Internet. The system is expected to be ready by baseball's opening day on March 28. The deal still leaves Major League Baseball without a partner to encode and deliver the game content, following the collapse of an agreement with former partner, RealNetworks. That company has separately sued Major League Baseball over a contract that stipulated games must be offered online in RealNetworks' streaming format.
