Redwood City, Calif. - Video game developer and publisher Electronic Arts (NASD: ERTS) announced on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with chipmaker Broadcom (NASD: BRCM), to optimize EA Mobile game titles for Broadcom's latest chips that support HD content and graphics the company says rival those on handheld consoles. Separately, EA announced that it will donate the original "SimCity" city-building game to each computer in the One Laptop per Child (OPLC) initiative. OPLC is expected to being distributing laptops in countries such as Uruguay, Peru, Mexico, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Haiti, Cambodia and India by the end of this year. Irvine, Calif. - Chipmaker Broadcom on Monday introduced what it says is the industry's first high-definition digital TV chip that supports full 1080p display resolution. The company said its 65 nanometer solution allows for integration of substantially more features, improved performance and reduced overall power consumption. The chip is currently available for sampling by early access customers.

Irvine, Calif. - Chipmaker Broadcom announced on Wednesday that Nintendo's next-generation Wii video game console will feature Broadcom Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies. The Bluetooth technology eliminates cables between the console and game controllers and other accessories, while Broadcom's Wi-Fi chip will allow the Wii to go online for multiplayer gaming and to download extra content. Nintendo's Wii console is scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter.

Andover, Mass. -- Three years after its founding, Sand Video, a venture capital-backed developer of video-related semiconductors for broadband communications, has agreed to be acquired for $77.5 million in cash and stock by California-based Broadcom, a provider of semiconductors for broadband communications and networking of voice, video and data services. Terms of the deal include $7.5 million in cash and about $70 million in Broadcom stock. Founded in 2001, Massachusetts-based Sand Video has raised $8 million in venture capital from Baker Capital, CommonAngels, and Navigator Technology Ventures.
