Motorola, Verizon to Sell Droid Smartphone for $199

Libertyville, Ill. - Motorola (NYSE: MOT)and mobile network partner Verizon (NYSE: VZ) on Wednesday introduced the Droid, a new Google (NASD: GOOG) Android-powered smartphone that will run on Verizon's 3G network. The touch-screen device features a 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi, and will sell for $199 with a two-year contract when it goes on sale Nov. 6. The Droid will also be the first smartphone capable of running Google Maps Navigation, the company's new turn-by-turn navigation application.

Motorola Introduces Cliq Android-Powered Smartphone

San Francisco - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) this week introduced the Cliq, its first handset to run Google's Android mobile operating system, which will go on sale in the fall exclusively from carrier T-Mobile (NYSE: DT). The phone, which has a social networking focus, sports a 3.1-inch touch-screen and a slide-out keyboard.

Blockbuster to Offer Movie Downloads to Motorola Phones

Dallas - Video rental giant Blockbuster (NYSE: BBI) announced that it has partnered with Motorola (NYSE: MOT) to make its OnDemand movie download service available on select Motorola mobile phones. Blockbuster, which did not provide details on a launch date or pricing, said the move was in line with its goal of making OnDemand available via multiple consumer electronics and portable devices.

Motorola to Offer Two Android Smartphones This Year

Schaumberg, Ill. - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) plans to offer two new Google (NASD: GOOG) Android-based smartphones in time for the holiday shopping season, ZDNet reports. "We also have plans for more devices in the first quarter of 2010," Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said on a conference call with analysts. Motorola currently claims about 5.5% of the global mobile phone handset market.

Fox Taps Motorola for Transition to All-HD TV Delivery

San Diego - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) announced on Monday that it has been selected by News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) Fox to provide the all of the equipment necessary to enable Fox to transition all its satellite program distribution to 100% high-definition delivery. The migration to Motorola technology, which will be deployed at the company's broadcast network, national cable channels, regional sports networks, Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network, will commence in the first quarter of 2009.

FCC: White Space Devices Meet 'Proof of Concept'

Washington - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued its report on its test of "white space" devices -- which could be used to deliver high-speed Internet access using portions of the broadcast spectrum -- which concludes that device prototypes have provided 'proof of concept,' helping spur FCC chairman Kevin Martin to publicly support the technology. It's now expected that the FCC will approve white space technology in some form when it votes on the issue on Nov. 4.

Schaumberg, Ill. - Motorola (NYSE: MOT) on Tuesday introduced three new music-optimized handsets in its ROKR line: the EM30 'candybar,' which utilizes its ModeShift technology to switch keypad colors in music and phone modes; the EM28, a clamshell device with touch-sensitive keys; and the EM25, a slider phone with FM radio sharing capabilities. The EM30 is expected to launch first in Taiwan then in other markets throughout the quarter, while the EM28 and EM25 will be available later this quarter across international markets.

Electronics Firms Partner on Wireless HD Standard

Santa Clara, Calif. - A consortium of consumer electronics and wireless technology developers -- including Sony (NYSE: SNE) and Samsung -- announced on Wednesday that they have partnered to jointly develop a new industry standard for wireless high-definition video. The WHDI (Wireless Home Digital Interface), a technology developed by Israel-based Amimon that includes a video-modem that operates in the 5GHz unlicensed band, will form the basis of the standard, which the companies hope to complete yet this year.

Comcast Begins Offering TiVo Service to Subscribers

New York - Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), the nation's largest cable TV provider, will this week finally begin offering TiVo's (NASD: TIVO) digital video recorder interface to subscribers, initially in the Boston area, USA Today reports. The deployment is the first to utilize new Tru2way technology, which allows greater interoperability between consumer electronics and cable systems, and will feature TiVo's interface on Motorola-made set-top boxes. The offering will not include TiVo features like access to media on home computers, or transfer of recorded shows to laptops or mobile devices. Comcast told USA Today that it plans to roll out to additional markets later this year; its partnership with TiVo runs through 2014.
