The USBTV technology uses a small, flash memory-based player that can download and store video from a PC, and then plug into virtually any TV for playback. A multimedia processor converts stored files into various TV video/audio formats for direct playback without having to make changes to the TV. The first pocket-sized players to feature USBTV technology are expected to ship in the spring. Minneapolis - Electronics and media retailer Best Buy announced on Thursday plans to launch a digital music store powered by RealNetworks' Rhapsody service. The Best Buy Digital Music Store, which launches Oct. 15, will feature tight integration with memory card maker SanDisk's line of Sansa Rhapsody MP3 players. Consumers who purchase the $139 (2GB) or $249 (8GB) Sansa e200 Rhapsody player will be given a free two-month subscription to the service, enabling unlimited downloads to the players; after the trial period the portable downloads service will cost $14.99 per month. Users can also purchase tracks from Rhapsody a la carte for 99 cents each. "Whether they want to purchase downloads or a subscription and have access to all the music, we're giving consumers the ability to enjoy entertainment on their terms," said Jennifer Schaidler, vice president of music for Best Buy. The launch coincided with the release of RealNetworks' Rhapsody 4.0, an enhanced version of the digital music service that allows users to drag-and-drop songs from the service directly onto their portable players.

Milpitas, Calif. - SanDisk, a maker of flash memory data storage cards used in MP3 players, mobile phones and other devices, said on Wednesday that it has received U.S. regulatory clearance to complete its $1.3 billion acquisition of Israel's msystems. The company said that the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 has expired, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has issued a no action letter. The deal still must be approved by msystems' shareholders and Israeli courts before closing. The deal, first announced in last July, would unite a pair of flash memory pioneers with complementary products, customers and channels. Msystems specializes in flash memory systems for the mobile, portable and embedded markets.

Seattle - RealNetworks, a provider of media delivery technology, on Monday launched Rhapsody DNA, a new technology platform that tightly integrates its digital music service with portable, mobile and in-home devices. In conjunction with the launch, the company announced a partnership with flash memory developer and MP3 player maker SanDisk, to integrate Rhapsody DNA into its Sansa line of MP3 players. Beginning in the fall, SanDisk Sansa e200 players will come pre-loaded with Rhapsody software, as well as nearly 32 hours of music from both major and independent labels. In addition, through Rhapsody the Sansa players will be able to automatically update with new music based on a consumer's personal tastes and historical music preferences. Seattle-based RealNetworks said device maker Sonos has also integrated Rhapsody DNA into its Sonos System Software 2.0. RealNetworks currently claims 1.625 million subscribers for its Rhapsody and other premium music services.
