Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Announces $30,000 Games for Health Competition

Princeton, N.J. - The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which focuses on health care-related issues, this week announced a $30,000 contest that will award entrants who develop game concepts or prototypes aimed at improving aspects of health and health care. The Foundation gave as examples game titles such as "Ben's Game," a skateboarding title for chemotherapy patients, and Konami's "Dance Dance Revolution," in which gamers burn calories while following dance steps. "Today's technology has the ability to both educate and entertain," said Chinwe Onyekere, program officer, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "We want to encourage people with creative minds to harness that potential in a way that leads to better management and delivery of health and health care." The Games for Health Competition will accept entries through April 1, 2007, with winners to be announced in May 2007.

Newcastle, Ontario - Online publishing start-up I Publish Press announced on Wednesday a call for entries to its inaugural Fiction Writing Competition. Twelve winning submissions will be published by I Publish Press and featured prominently for sale on its website. "We want twelve great new books to showcase to all those eager readers out there," said Michelle Noel, editor and co-publisher of I Publish Press. "We think the way the conventional publication process works, many talented authors are overlooked. The Bronte sisters, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce all published through unconventional means at one time or another."

Bix.com Creates Online Talent Competitions for User-Generated Media

Palo Alto, Calif. - Bix.com on Wednesday introduced its website that lets anyone create an online talent competition. After creating a theme, the site asks users to decide how entries should be submitted (e.g. audio, video, photo) and offers an e-mail marketing tool to publicize the contest.

CMP Media Posts Guidelines for 2007 Independent Games Festival

San Francisco - The Independent Games Festival, part of CMP Media's annual Game Developers Conference, on Tuesday announced the rules and guidelines for its 2007 competition, which will award over $50,000 in cash prizes at the conference next March.
