Scientific-Atlanta Acquires Video Compression Firm UB Video

Atlanta - Set-top box maker Scientific-Atlanta announced on Monday that it has acquired Vancouver-based UB Video, a provider of advanced video compression technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "This combination will provide significant benefits to our customers worldwide as they roll out new and advanced standard- and high-definition programming services to satisfy consumer demand," said Dean Rockwell, vice president and general manager of digital media networks at Scientific-Atlanta. Cisco Systems' acquisition of Scientific-Atlanta for $6.9 billion is expected to close in the current quarter.

French Video Compression Developer Ateme Raises $4.8 Million

Paris - Ateme, a France-based developer of video compression technology, announced that it has raised $4.8 million in venture capital financing. France-based XAnge Private Equity and Ventech led the round. Ateme said it would use the funds to enhance its video compression technology and support international expansion. The company's next subsidiary will be opened in Silicon Valley, according to CEO Michel Artieres.

Deluxe Acquires Matsushita's DVD Compression & Authoring Business

Burbank, Calif. -- Deluxe, a provider of technology and media services for the film industry, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired Digital Video Compression Center, the DVD compression and authoring services unit of Japan's Matsushita. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Burbank, Calif.-based Deluxe said the acquisition will create the industry's largest provider of DVD compression and authoring services, which will be offered alongside its other DVD production services. "Demand for the highest quality compression and authoring services keeps growing as picture quality and disc features continue to drive the DVD market, and DVCC has as much experience in these categories as anyone in the industry," said DVCC head Ron Martin, who will now become vice president of post production for Deluxe.
