After much anticipation and some expected delays (convincing content providers to use a new platform is very time consuming, if you have not heard), BitTorrent is finally launching it's entertainment network. We [Parks Associates] are believers in P2P content delivery, be it P2P download or P2P streaming, and it's great to see major content providers finally embracing it. San Francisco - A week after announcing that it has landed $20 million in new funding, BitTorrent, a provider of peer-to-peer file-sharing technology, said on Friday that it has paid an undisclosed amount to acquire uTorrent, a lightweight implementation of the BitTorrent protocol.

Musicrypt to Expand Secure Industry Service to U.K., Europe

London - Musicrypt, a provider of a secure, Web-based music delivery system between record labels, radio stations and others in the music industry, announced that it has partnered with London-based Adstream to market its service in the U.K., Europe and Australia. Musicrypt's DMDS service delivered over 5,000 songs from more than 150 labels to U.S. radio stations during the third quarter.

San Francisco - Wired News on Monday featured an interview with Bram Cohen, developer of the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing application. Contrary to reports last week that Cohen is leaving the company -- which accompanied news that BitTorrent had raised $20 million in new financing and signed new deals with networks and studios -- Cohen told Wired News he's staying at BitTorrent. He also confirmed that content from studios and networks distributed on BitTorrent will be protected by Windows DRM. "We're going to see everything continue to become more web-based, and the special status of high-quality video files and other large files as somehow different will go away. The current limitations on distributing them will cease to exist," Cohen told Wired News.

P2P Media Distributor Azureus Raises $12 Million

Palo Alto, Calif. - Azureus, a provider of peer-to-peer distribution services for large files, announced on Monday that it has raised $12 million in its second round of venture capital financing. Redpoint Ventures led the investment round; Greycroft Partners, BV Capital and CNET chairman Jarl Mohn also participated.

Mobile Content Delivery Firm Motricity Cuts 50 Jobs

Durham, N.C. - Motricity, a provider of content delivery technology for mobile devices, is cutting about 50 jobs, the News & Observer reported. The company has added hundreds of employees over the past year and a half, but needs to reduce costs "to make the company more successful," CEO Ryan Wuerch said in the article. Motricity recently acquired GoldPocket Wireless, a provider of mobile marketing solutions for media and entertainment companies.

HD Content Delivery Firm Swarmcast Raises $5 Million

San Jose, Calif. - Video game publisher Electronic Arts has redesigned its online game download service, the Associated Press reported. The old EA Downloader service will be replaced by EA Link, which will initially offer a selection of 16 PC games for download, with new PC titles from EA to be added day and date with their release on disc in retail stores.

Mountain View, Calif. - Skyrider, a developer of a new peer-to-peer networking platform, said on Tuesday that it has raised $12 million in its third round of funding, led by ComVentures. Previous investors Sequoia Capital and Charles River Venture Partners also participated in the round, which increased the company's total backing to $20 million. Mountain View, Calif.-based Skyrider's platform allows businesses to promote the commercialization of P2P networks through advertising supported content distribution, and targeted marketing.

J. River Debuts Ctrax Media Player for Cdigix Service

San Francisco - BitTorrent, the popular peer-to-peer file-sharing network, announced on Monday that it has partnered with a number of consumer electronics firms, which plan to embed BitTorrent into their products. ASUS, Planex and QNAP will implement the BitTorrent download manager into a range of wireless routers, media servers and storage devices, which will allow users to download media files from BitTorrent without the need of a PC.
