AT&T, Comcast, Cox Aiding RIAA Anti-piracy Actions

Nashville, Tenn. - At the behest of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), broadband service providers AT&T (NYSE: T), Comcast (NASD: CMCSA) and Cox are sending warning letters to subscribers believed to be engaged in illegal file-sharing, CNET News.com reported. The letters sent so far stop short of threatening that a user's Internet account could be suspended or terminated for repeat offenses, a punishment the major record labels are currently lobbying for around the world.

Sony, Cable Co.'s Ink Deal for Set-top Box-Free Cable TV

Washington - Sony Electronics (NYSE: SNE) and six major U.S. cable TV providers have announced an agreement that will enable Sony to develop and sell televisions able to connect directly to cable TV services without the need of a set-top box. The agreement between Sony and cable providers Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Cox, Charter (NASD: CHTR), Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) and Bright House Networks -- which collectively serve 82% of U.S. cable subscribers -- will allow "two-way" digital TVs and other devices to deliver both standard cable programming and interactive services like pay-per-view and video-on-demand.

Study Finds Comcast, Cox Interfering with File-Sharing Traffic

New York - Along with known file-sharing traffic throttler Comcast (NASD: CMCSA), fellow broadband provider Cox Communications is also interfering with the usage of BitTorrent and similar peer-to-peer applications by its subscribers, the Associated Press reported, citing research conducted by German's Max Planck Institute for Software Systems. The study monitored over 8,000 Internet users worldwide, and found conclusive evidence of blocked file-sharing connections only by Comcast, Cox and Singapore's StarHub.

Cox Launches Cox Rhapsody Music Subscription Service

Herndon, Va. - Cable TV and broadband provider Cox Communications on Thursday announced the launch of the Cox Rhapsody digital music service with customers in Northern Virginia. Developed with partner RealNetworks, the service offers unlimited on-demand access to Rhapsody's entire catalog for $12.99 per month; for $14.99 per month, users can also transfer songs to supported portable players.

- Cox Television on Thursday announced that it has formed a new company, called Cox Cross Media, that will focus on online media advertising sales for its roughly 300 television stations. The new company plans to work with multiple media platforms, including mobile, in the future, Cox said. Cox Cross Media will be based in New York City.

RHI to Offer World Premiere Movies on Cable TV VOD Systems

New York - TV production company RHI Entertainment on Monday announced plans to distribute 24 world premiere movies in the action, thriller and horror genres to cable TV subscribers on their video-on-demand services. RHI (formerly Hallmark Entertainment) will offer the films in both standard and HD VOD through partners including Time Warner Cable, Cox, Cablevision and Bright House Networks. RHI films slated for VOD premieres include "Black Friday" (Judd Nelson); "Maneater" (Gary Busey); and "Eye of the Beast" (James Van Der Beek). Following the VOD premieres, the films will air on networks including Sci-Fi, Spike TV and Lifetime, and be distributed on home video through Genius Entertainment.

Nine Broadcast Groups Join Open Mobile Video Coalition

Washington - The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC), an association of television broadcasters looking to accelerate development of mobile digital broadcast TV in the U.S., announced on Tuesday that nine additional broadcast station groups have joined its ranks. New members Cox Television, Dispatch Broadcast Group, Freedom Broadcasting, LIN TV, Meredith, Media General, Post-Newsweek Stations, Raycom Media and Schurz Communications joined existing members including Belo, NBC, Tribune Fox and Gannett. The OMVC plans to develop standards, devices and business models with the goal of a 2009 launch.

Cox to Disable Ad-Skipping on ABC, ESPN On-Demand Programs

New York - Cable TV provider Cox Communications has signed a deal with Disney to offer ABC and ESPN programming on-demand, but with the ability to skip past ads disabled for subscribers, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Time Warner Cable also disables the fast-forward button on some of its on-demand programming.

MLB Signs Deal with In Demand to Offer "Extra Innings" on Cable

Alviso, Calif. - TiVo, the maker of digital video recorders, announced on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with Cox Communications, the nation's fourth-largest cable TV provider, to customize its digital video recorder software for deployment on Cox digital video recorder set-tops. Cox Digital Cable subscribers with digital video recorder service will be given the option to subscribe to TiVo, and the TiVo software will be pushed to their existing digital video recorder set-tops. The service is expected to launch in select Cox markets in the first half of 2007.

Cox to Offer Free Washington Redskins Programs On-Demand

Herndon, Va. - Cable TV provider Cox Communications announced on Tuesday a programming partnership with the Washington Redskins, which will bring a variety of free on-demand football programs to Cox subscribers in Fairfax County and the Fredericksburg region. The deal, which covers the 2006-2008 seasons, includes programs like "Joe Gibbs Coach's Show," "Redskins Game Day," ":60 with a Redskin" and "Cheerleader Profiles." Another aspect of the deal will offer desktop software that provides team updates and news alerts to Cox broadband subscribers.

Cox Expands VOD Library, Signs with Gemstar for Program Guides

Atlanta - Cox Communications, the nation's third-largest cable TV provider with 6.6 million customers, announced on Monday that it has expanded its video-on-demand library to over 1,300 available hours of programming. Cox added shows from MTV Networks, PBS Kids Sprout, G4, National Geographic Channel, Speed Channel, Fuse and TV Guide Spot to the service. The company said that some Cox Digital Cable subscribers will now be given free access to its video-on-demand service. Separately, Cox said it has signed a long-term agreement to use Gemstar-TV Guide's interactive program guide on its digital cable systems. As part of the deal, Cox will also offer Gemstar's TV Guide Channel and TVG horseracing and interactive waging networks.

RealNetworks Signs Rhapsody Distribution Deals With HP, Cox

Las Vegas - RealNetworks, a provider of media delivery technology and content subscription services, announced on Thursday that PC maker HP has signed a deal to bundle the Rhapsody music service with its computers -- replacing former partner Apple and its iTunes software. Starting in the spring, purchasers of new HP and Compaq computers will receive a 30-day free trial to Rhapsody Unlimited; the RealNetworks software will also be made the default media software on the machines. Separately, Seattle-based RealNetworks said it has signed an agreement with Cox Communications, the nation's third-largest cable TV company. Under the deal, Cox will offer Rhapsody to its high-speed Internet customers through its Cox.net portal, with the ability to add Rhapsody charges to their monthly Cox bill.
