Buzz Watch: Stephen Colbert Thanks Craig Newmark For Killing Newspapers

Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist, was interviewed on last night’s episode of The Colbert Report. Newmark was also liveblogging his appearance over on here, here and here, as the blog Laughing Squid pointed out. Stephen Colbert thanked him for killing the American Newspaper and made Newmark answer the question: "Why haven't you sold out for a billion dollars yet?"

The Craig's List Husband-Seeker?Some things just resonate with the masses.  Today a Craig’s List ad (whether real or not has yet to be determined) posted by a “spectacularly beautiful 25 year old girl” made its way around people’s inboxes at lightening speed.  It might have set a record, in fact, for “Most Forwarded Email” not containing a picture or video.  Here’s the ad in full:

Poor newspapers. Their cash cow service, classified ads, is probably about to break a record for facing more competition from free services than any other in the history of paid services. Faceboook recently piled on to the Craigslist disruption of the newspaper classified market with a free classifieds marketplace. Now eBay has launched a free classified site call Kijiji in 220 U.S. cities:

Cox’s Palm Beach Post.com, fighting to stave off Craig’s List and slackening ad trends for newspapers in general, has focused on creating a super site for shopping. The site is replete with free ads, new features such as video, free direct-connect calls to advertisers, online coupons, post-your-own photos, and alternative channels beyond a Web site, including kiosk- and mobile access.
