Report: Craigslist Revenue to Top $100 Million This Year

Los Angeles - Online classifieds giant Craigslist is on track to generate $100 million in revenue this year, up 23% from its estimated revenue of $81 million last year, according to a report from market research firm AIM Group/Classified Intelligence.

San Francisco - After receiving threats of criminal charges from South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster over its alleged refusal to block prostitution and graphic pornographic ads on the site, Craigslist yesterday sued McMaster, seeking declaratory relief and a restraining order against the charges. "In addition to being unwarranted by the facts, legal experts agree that the charges threatened represent an unconstitutional prior restraint on free speech, and are clearly barred by federal law," Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster wrote in a blog post.

San Francisco - The Attorney General for the state of South Carolina has launched criminal investigation of Craigslist, after the site failed to remove alleged ads for prostitution and graphic pornography by Friday, according to reports. After meetings with a group of state attorneys general last week, Craigslist took the drastic step of eliminating its "Erotic Services" section entirely, and said it would manually monitor all ads placed in a new "Adult Services" section.

Chicago - Online classifieds site Craigslist has agreed to remove its "Erotic Services" section, after complaints from a raft of state attorneys general that it was a haven for soliciting prostitution. After previous complaints, fueled in part by the revelation that alleged "Craigslist Killer" Philip Markoff sourced his victims from the site, Craigslist had agreed to crack down on Erotic Services posts, requiring a valid phone number and credit card information.

Wal-Mart Taps Oodle to Launch Online Classified Ads

Los Angeles - Retail giant Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) has launched a beta test of an online classified ads listing service powered by Oodle, which aggregates listings from over 80,000 sites and counts over 40 million listings.

Reston, Va. - Some of the top Internet brands, including Google (NASD: GOOG), Facebook, Wikipedia and Craigslist, were among the biggest gainers last year in terms of their Internet audiences, according to a new report from comScore (NASD: SCOR).

Mdog.com Launches Mobile Versions of eBay, Craigslist, Wikipedia

Chicago - Mdog.com on Tuesday launched mobile editions of popular websites including eBay, Craigslist, Wikipedia, Citysearch and MySpace. The free Mdog.com portal is compatible will all carrier services on any Web-enabled mobile device. The new mobile sites will allow users to securely view post bids on eBay, and view online classifieds from Craigslist, among other features. Chicago-based Mdog.com also soon plans to launch its Bingo mobile search engine.

Report: Traffic to Online Classifieds Sites Grew 47% in Past Year

Reston, Va. - Traffic to online classifieds sites such as Craigslist has grown 47% in the past year, according to new figures from comScore Media Metrix. More than 37 million Web users -- or more than a fifth of the total Internet population -- visited the sites in July. Craigslist led the way, attracting nearly 14 million visitors, about twice as many as a year ago.

Online Auction Giant eBay Buys 25% Stake in Craigslist

San Francisco -- Giving it the added strength of a major backer, craigslist, a provider of classified ad sites in 45 cities, said on Friday that it has sold a 25% stake in the company to online auction giant eBay for an undisclosed price. As much as the financial support, the company said that it will be able to share in eBay's expertise, resources and creativity. "[eBay CEO] Meg [Whitman] has helped us preserve the craigslist mission, and I really appreciate it," said Craig Newmark, craigslist's founder and chairman. "We're thrilled to have found a shareholder of eBay's stature," said Jim Buckmaster, the president and CEO of craigslist. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Craigslist sites include localized classified listings for jobs, housing, goods and services, personals, events, and community, as well as a variety of discussion forums.
