Dell to Bundle Free Napster Subscription on Select PCs

Round Rock, Texas - Computer maker Dell (NASD: DELL) on Friday announced a deal with Best Buy-owned (NYSE: BBY) digital music service Napster, that will see select Dell machines sold pre-loaded with a free year of Napster -- including 60 free MP3s and 12 months of free streaming. The downloaded DRM-free songs can be ported to any portable device, including mobile phones.

Dell to Sell Nickelodeon-branded PC for Kids

San Francisco - Dell (NASD: DElL) has partnered with Viacom's (NYSE: VIA) Nickelodeon children's cable network on a co-branded PC for kids, Reuters reports. The 10-inch Dell Inspiron Mini Nickelodeon Edition netbook will feature a "green slime" hue, and designs featuring characters like SpongeBob SquarePants and iCarly. It will also offer embedded links to Nickelodeon online content.

China Demands PC Makers Add Site-Censoring Software

Beijing - The government of China has mandated that, starting next month, PC makers include software on new computers that will help censor content it deems to be "unhealthy," Reuters reports. The "Green Dam-Youth Escort" software is necessary "in order to consolidate the achievements of the online campaign against pornography, combine punishment and prevention, protect the healthy growth of young people, and promote the Internet's healthy and orderly development," according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

WSJ: Dell Scraps Plan to Launch Digital Music Player

New York - PC and peripherals maker Dell (NASD: DELL) has abandoned plans to launch a digital music player in time for the holiday shopping season, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. The company acquired Zing, a maker of wireless-enabled software for portable devices, last August. The Journal's source said that while Dell has decided to shelve plans to launch a music player indefinitely, it will go ahead with plans to release the Zing media jukebox software.

Dell, Universal Music Offer Pre-loaded PC MP3 Bundles

Round Rock, Texas - PC maker Dell (NASD: DELL) on Thursday announced a deal with Universal Music Group, to offer pre-loaded MP3 bundles on select new purchases on Dell.com. A "curated selection" of 50 and 100-song MP3 bundles will be available starting at $25 -- which Dell pointed out is approximately half of current standard per-track pricing.

Round Rock, Texas - PC maker Dell (NASD: DELL) on Tuesday announced a deal with Paramount Digital Entertainment (NYSE: VIA) that will see a copy of the movie "Iron Man" pre-installed as an option on newly purchased computers. For an extra $20, consumers can order a special digital edition of "Iron Man" with a bonus featurette that will come pre-loaded on select Inspiron, Dell Studio and XPS laptops and desktops.

Microsoft to Dispute FCC Finding on Prototype Internet Devices

Computer giant Dell said on Wednesday that founder Michael Dell will assume the role of CEO, replacing Kevin Rollins, who has resigned. Dell also will retain his duties as chairman of the board. "There is no better person in the world to run Dell at this time than the man who created" the company, said Samuel Nunn, the presiding director of Dell's board. Dell founded the company in 1984 and previously served as its CEO until 2004. The move comes as Dell said that its fourth quarter financial results will fall below Wall Street estimates for both revenue and earnings per share.

Alienware to Carry Phantom Entertainment Accessories

Seattle - Phantom Entertainment announced on Tuesday that Alienware, a unit of Dell that makes high-performance PCs and accessories for gamers, has agreed to carry its Phantom wireless keyboard and laser mouse. Seattle-based Phantom's gaming keyboard is the first product to be brought to market by the company behind the Phantom Game Service, a PC-based broadband game service first announced on 2002 that has yet to be released.

The latest news about Dell's exploding laptop saga is not good - there is a front page piece in the NY Times today about their battery recall and the whole scenario is providing fuel for the "I told you so" crowd that fanned the flames of Dell Hell.  A more interesting development, however, is how Dell is using the blog they quietly launched a few months back as a sounding board to offer their side of the story.

Dell to Acquire High-Performance Gaming PC Maker Alienware

Round Rock, Texas - PC maker Dell announced on Wednesday that it will acquire Alienware, a maker of high-end gaming PCs. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Dell said Alienware will become a subsidiary and maintain its own product line, management team, and marketing and sales staffs. "Alienware's products are an excellent complement to Dell's own line of high-performance computers designed for gaming, enthusiast and media content customers," said Dell chairman Michael Dell. Founded in 1996, Alienware makes high-performance designer PCs -- some are shaped like alien heads -- that cost between $3,000 and $4,000, and are marketed to PC gamers and multimedia enthusiasts. The company saw sales of $172 million in 2005, and expects that number to increase to $225 million this year.
