Reston, Va. - Following the launch of its North American satellite earlier this month, ICO Global Communications said that it has signed a deal with Discovery Communications, which will provide content for the alpha trials of the company's new mobile interactive media service, known as ICO mim. Silver Spring, Md. - Judith McHale, the president and CEO of Discovery Communications, said that she will step down as of Dec. 1 to focus on domestic and global issues. McHale, who has been the company's president since 1995 and was also named CEO in 2004, will continue to advise Chairman John Hendricks on Discovery's education business initiatives, and also will continue to volunteer as chairman of the Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership.

Episodes of "Shark Week," "Mythbusters" and other programs will be available for $1.99 each. Maryland-based Discovery also recently launched several broadband channels, and plans to debut a 24-hour mobile TV network in the third quarter of 2006.

Arlington, Va. - PBS and Discovery Communications on Monday announced a partnership to distribute PBS programming through Discovery Education's digital learning services. Titles such as "Nova," "Frontline," "The Civil War" and other Ken Burns documentaries will be tailored to state curriculum standards and offered on the video-on-demand service. Teachers at 70,000 participating schools may then download video clips or stream them for instructional use.

Silver Spring, Md. - Discovery Communications, the media company behind such cable channels as the Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet, said that it has acquired U.K.-based Antenna Audio, a developer of audio and multimedia tours for more than 350 museums and cultural sites. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Discovery said that the business will become an "integral part" of its newly formed Travel Media group. Last year, Antenna sold over 20 million audio and multimedia tours in 20 countries.

Oakland, Calif. - Pandora Media, a provider of an online music recommendation engine, announced on Thursday that it has launched a free, ad-supported version of its music discovery service. The company's subscription-based version of the service, launched in August, is based on data accrued from the Music Genome Project, in which musician analysts looked at 400 musical attributes in describing songs and their relation to others. Oakland, Calif.-based Pandora's service allows users to choose songs and create online radio stations that automatically populate with songs that share key musical traits.

Silver Spring, Md. -- Cable TV network operator Discovery Communications, which owns The Discovery Channel, announced on Monday that it has acquired educational publisher Rainbow Educational Media. The companies did not provide financial details of the transaction, which marks Discovery's second recent acquisition of an educational publisher, having purchased AIMS Multimedia last week. The deals will add programming to Discovery's newly formed Discovery Education video-on-demand unit, which aims to provide resources for educators. Raleigh, N.C.-based Rainbow produces educational videos, CD-ROMs and DVDs for children and students in grades K-8.
