Voom HD Claims $1B in Damages from DISH Network Exit

New York - Voom HD Networks, a suite of HD channels owned by Cablevision's (NYSE: CVC) Rainbow Media, has filed a complaint against satellite TV provider DISH Network (NASD: DISH) with the New York Supreme Court, claiming over $1 billion in damages in the wake of DISH's dropping Voom's channels from its service last month, Multichannel News reported.

DISH Network to Test Satellite-to-Handheld Device Technology

Englewood, Colo. - DISH Network Corp. announced on Thursday that it has partnered with French telecommunications equipment firm Alcatel-Lucent to conduct a test of technology that transmits satellite TV signals to handheld devices this summer. The companies will test the performance and cost efficiency of the DVB-SH mobile broadcast standard.

Alviso, Calif. - TiVo (NASD: TIVO) said on Thursday that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has upheld its claim that rival EchoStar (NASD: DISH), operator of the DISH Network satellite TV service, was infringing on one of its digital video recorder patents, and must pay $74 million in damages, now $94 million with accrued interest.

Washington - A panel of judges with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has signaled that it will likely rule at least partially in favor of TiVo in the company's patent infringement case against satellite TV firm EchoStar Communications, the Associated Press reported.

DISH Network Launches Setanta Sports Channel

Englewood, Colo. - EchoStar Communications, operator of the DISH Network satellite TV service, said on Thursday that it has added Setanta Sports' programming package -- which includes more than 1,000 live events, including U.K. and European soccer -- to its offering. The Setanta Sports channel will be available for $14.99 per month to residential subscribers, and $100 per month for business subscribers.

TiVo Wins $74 Million Patent Case Against EchoStar's DISH Network

Alviso, Calif. - TiVo announced that a federal jury has awarded the company $74 million in damages, ruling in its favor in a patent infringement lawsuit the company brought against EchoStar Communications, operator of the DISH Network satellite TV service. The jury found that EchoStar willfully infringed TiVo's patent on a "multimedia time warping system" used in its digital video recorder set-tops and corresponding service. The judge may choose to triple the damages EchoStar must pay as a result of the "willful" infringement finding, although EchoStar plans to appeal. "We believe the decision will be reversed either through post-trial motions or on appeal. Additionally, the Patent Office is in the process of re-examining TiVo's patent, having determined there is a substantial question concerning the validity of the patent," EchoStar said in a statement. TiVo plans to seek a permanent injunction against EchoStar's digital video recorders; the company's shares hit a 52-week high of $8.65 on Monday, riding news of the patent case win.

DISH Network Reaches 12 Million Satellite TV Subscribers

Englewood, Colo. - EchoStar Communications, operator of the DISH Network satellite TV service, announced on Wednesday that it passed the 12 million subscriber mark during December 2005. The company said it gained its first million subscribers in December 1997, adding that the 6.74 million net new customers it has gained over the past five years is more than all other satellite TV and cable companies during the same period. Rival DirecTV currently claims 15 million customers.

Englewood, Colo. -- Satellite TV provider DISH Network announced on Monday that it has partnered with six TV networks to create an interactive TV application to enhance coverage of the upcoming November elections. Built by interactive TV firm OpenTV, the Election 2004 Coverage channel on DISH Network will allow viewers to simultaneously view live election coverage from CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CSPAN, MTV and Comedy Central on a single screen. The company will also conduct a non-scientific DISH Network Presidential Election Poll, where AT&T Wireless, Cingular and Verizon subscribers can vote for their candidate using text messaging, at $0.50 per vote.

TiVo Sues DISH Network Parent EchoStar for Patent Infringement

San Jose, Calif. -- TiVo, a developer of digital video recorder services, announced on Tuesday that it has sued satellite TV company EchoStar Communications, which operates the DISH Network, for patent infringement in a Texas federal court. San Jose, Calif.-based TiVo said that EchoStar is infringing on its "Time Warp" patent, which covers technology including a method for recording one program while playing back another, watching a program as it is recording, and a storage format that supports pausing a live television broadcast, fast-forwarding, rewinding, instant replays and slow motion. The company is seeking unspecified monetary damages as well as an injunction against future sales of digital video recorders by EchoStar. "We've invested in building a comprehensive patent portfolio to protect our intellectual property and as the DVR category grows, we will be aggressive in protecting those assets," said TiVo CEO Mike Ramsay.
