In spite of all the hype around web video, he said that legal downloading is not going to replace the DVD business anytime soon. “Today the consumers overwhelmingly choose DVDs over downloading, but they are becoming more and more net savvy”, Sarandos said.

Digital Music Distributor IODA Signs 4 Physical Distributors

San Francisco - IODA, a provider of digital distribution and marketing services for independent record labels, announced on Tuesday that it has added four new independent physical distributors to its catalog. Burnside Distribution Corp (BDC), Liaison Distribution, Thirty Tigers and Traffic Entertainment will now be able to offer their client labels digital distribution through IODA's network of more than 300 digital retailers.

WB Home E. Signs US Distribution Deal With UK Game Publisher Codemasters

Burbank, Calif. - Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced on Tuesday that it has signed a North American distribution agreement with U.K.-based game publisher Codemasters. Under the terms, Warner Bros. will provide distribution, sales and trade marketing services for Codemasters titles, including "DIRT: Colin McRae Off-Road," "Overlord" and "Clive Barker's Jericho."

Real D To Show 3D Movies By National Geographic

Washington - Real D, a developer of digital 3D cinema technology, announced on Tuesday that it will make 3D films produced National Geographic available to its movie theater partners. The first National Geographic title available in Real D will be "Lions 3D: Roar of the Kalahari," set for release in the spring of 2007.

Blockbuster Lets Movie Rental Customers Try Video Games For Free

Dallas - Blockbuster announced on Tuesday that it has given members of its Total Access online/in-store DVD rental program the option to try out up to 12 new video games a year for free. Members may now choose to use the free monthly in-store rental included in their membership for either a movie or game rental.

Mozart Foundation Publishes Composer's Works on Free Website

Salzburg, Austria -- The International Mozart Foundation in Austria has published the entirety of the composer's more than 600 works on its website. In addition to 24,000 pages of music, the free site includes more than 8,000 pages of critical reports and commentary on Mozart.

Akamai Debuts Net Usage Index for Digital Music Websites

Cambridge, Mass. - Akamai, a provider of content network delivery services, on Monday announced the launch of a service that tracks global Web usage patterns of visitors to more than 40 digital music websites. The Akamai Net Usage Index for Digital Music measures traffic to music download sites, music destination sites, and live radio broadcast services like XM Satellite Radio, Clear Channel, MTV and Napster. Data collected from the Index over the past three months shows that North America, Asia and Europe represent the bulk of visitor traffic to these sites, which at peak times each day count more than half a million visitors per minute.

The Orchard, Warner/Chappell Sign Ringtone Distribution Agreement

New York - The Orchard, a digital distributor of independent label music, said on Thursday that it reached an agreement with Warner/Chappell Music, the music publishing arm of major record label Warner Music Group. Under the terms, The Orchard will be granted rights to make songs whose publishing is controlled by Warner/Chappell available as master recording ringtones and ringback tones to U.S. wireless subscribers through its network partners.

Dijji to Distribute Napster Ringtones to MetroPCS Subscribers

Seattle - Mobile entertainment publisher Dijji said on Thursday that it has launched the Napster Ringtones service with MetroPCS, a mobile network operator with over 2 million customers in San Francisco, Miami, Tampa, Atlanta and Sacramento. Seattle-based Dijji also distributes Napster Ringtones through Cingular, T-Mobile, Alltel, Rogers Wireless, Fido and Telus.

New York - The Orchard, a digital distributor of independent label music, on Tuesday announced a number of new international signings that came out of the MIDEM international music conference in Cannes, France. The Orchard will now distribute tracks from Asha Bhosle, Dion, Ofra Haza, Simply Red, Buddha Bar, The Waifs and others to digital retailers and services including iTunes, Napster and Rhapsody.

New MTV Organizational Structure to Highlight Digital Distribution

New York - Viacom's MTV network on Wednesday announced a new organizational structure that will put digital distribution of its programming on equal footing with television. The company will operate two divisions -- one whose focus will remain on television, and another that will develop short-form video, music and news content for TV as well as online, video-on-demand, broadband, wireless and other digital platforms. The company named Dave Sirulnick as its new executive vice president of MTV Multiplatform Production, News and Music, who will work with vice president of digital media Ben White and MTVN chief digital officer Jason Hirchhorn under the new structure. The company also said vice president of label relations Peter Baron will now additionally program its video-on-demand and MHD platforms. "This new way of aligning creative talent to tee-up linear and non-linear entertainment for the audience will enable MTV to break through the clutter, launch new music superstars and develop for platforms not yet created," said MTV Networks president Van Toffler.

Vivendi, Valve Settle Lawsuit Over Video Game Distribution Rights

Bellevue, Wash. -- Valve Software, the video game developer behind popular multiplayer online titles including "Half-Life" and "Counter-Strike," announced that it has settled the lawsuit it brought against Vivendi Universal over the distribution rights to its titles. Under the terms, Vivendi will cease distributing its re-packaged versions of Valve's games at retailers; Valve operates its own online game distribution technology. Vivendi will also void any licenses it granted to cybercafés, which may then re-sign to offer the game through Valve.

MTV, Motorola Sign Wireless Content Distribution Deal

Miami -- Cell phone maker Motorola and MTV announced on Monday a partnership that will see Motorola become the exclusive worldwide provider of MTV-branded wireless content. The deal includes a series of wireless games dubbed "Plastikulture," and a wireless version of MTV's "Exquisite Corpse" image campaign. Content will be pre-loaded on select new Motorola handsets and become available for download at Motorola's wireless portal HelloMoto.com by this summer.
