Dolby, Infitec Team to Develop 3D Digital Cinema System

Los Angeles - Dolby Laboratories' (NYSE: DLB) Digital Cinema unit this week announced a deal with Germany's Infitec to develop and market a digital 3D cinema delivery system for theaters, Variety reported. The company hopes its system, which will compete with offerings from Real D and In-Three, will be available for deployment by next spring.

Dolby Laboratories, the developer of audio and surround sound technologies, on Thursday named George Lin as its vice
president and CIO
. Lin most recently served as the CIO of San Francisco-based Advent Software, and previously headed up the consolidated IT organization of EMC Software.

The Digital Media Association (DiMA) a trade organization devoted exclusively to meeting the needs of digital media artists, consumers and producers, announced today the appointment of Christine Layman as its new Manager of Congressional Relations. Layman joins DiMA following four years of service in the U.S. House of Representatives. Most recently, Layman served as the House Judiciary Committee's Administrative Clerk and Security Officer. Previously, she was Assistant to the Committee's Chief of Staff.

GoFish Corporation, a user-generated video company, today announced the launch of a branded entertainment division and the appointment of three new hires to run it. C.J. Bowden, David Fisch and Lori Macias join GoFish as Vice Presidents of Branded Entertainment. Bowden, Fisch and Macias most recently were co-founders in SlingShot Media, a Los Angeles based start-up. Prior to SlingShot, they spent a combined 15 years at Yahoo.

San Jose-based Adobe Systems, the large maker of business and mobile software, on Monday named former Intel executive Ann Lewnes as its Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications. Lewnes previously served as Intel's vice president of sales and marketing and director of partner marketing, which included responsibility for the "Intel Inside" program.

Vista, Calif. - Tritton Technologies on Wednesday shipped its Audio Xtreme AX360 line of high-performance digital gaming headsets for the Xbox, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2. The $149 headphones feature Dolby-certified 2.1 and 5.1 digital sound separation, with four speakers in each ear cup.

MTV Launches High-Definition Channel in Dolby Digital 5.1

San Francisco - MTV Networks said on Tuesday that it recently launched its first high-definition channel, MHD, which broadcasts in Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Programming will include "MTV Unplugged," "VH1 Storytellers," "CMT Crossroads" and other music concerts and events. MHD will deliver programming to broadcast centers using the Dolby E compression format, which is then re-encoded into Dolby 5.1 for transmission to cable and satellite TV providers, and on to HDTV receivers and set-top boxes.

Dolby Installs 5 Digital Cinema Systems in Italian Multiplex

Wootton Bassett, England - Dolby Laboratories announced on Wednesday that an Italian multiplex has installed five of its Dolby Digital Cinema projection systems, in the largest European installation of digital cinema systems in a single theater. The digital systems were installed at The Furlan Group's new CineCity multiplex in Padova. Dolby said that it has now installed over 100 of its digital cinema systems worldwide.

Disney, Dolby Labs to Equip 100 Theaters With Digital Projectors

Burbank, Calif. -- The Walt Disney Studios announced that it has partnered with Dolby Laboratories, to install Dolby digital cinema projection systems in 100 theaters in 25 top U.S. markets. The installations will be done in part to promote Disney Digital 3D -- a new 3D format developed by effects firm Industrial Light & Magic -- that Disney is using for the release of its "Chicken Little" animated feature, due in theaters on Nov. 4. "We are pleased that Chicken Little is the first animated movie to use our new process using Disney's actual 3D models, animation, and camera data," said ILM president Chrissie England. "This process allows us to provide a richer, more nuanced viewing experience for moviegoers than any existing postproduction techniques."

Dolby Laboratories Shares Up 38% in IPO

San Francisco -- Audio technology developer Dolby Laboratories saw its shares rise 38% during an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday. The company sold 27.5 million shares at $18 per share -- up from a previous projected debut range of between $13.50 and $15.50 per share -- and then saw its stock price climb to $24.63 during first day trading. Founded in 1965, San Francisco-based Dolby develops audio and surround sound technologies used in cinema, broadcast, home audio systems, cars, DVDs, headphones, games, televisions and personal computers. The company reported $289 million in sales for 2004, fueled by license royalties of from DVD players and other devices that feature surround sound.

Audio Developer Dolby Files to Raise $460 Million in IPO

San Francisco -- Dolby Laboratories, a San Francisco-based developer of sound technologies, said on Friday that it has filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to raise $460 million in an initial public offering (IPO). The offering will include shares to be sold by Dolby Laboratories and by Ray Dolby, who founded the company 40 years ago and remains its principal shareholder. Details such as the number of shares to be issued and the date of the offering, have yet to be announced. Dolby expects to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "DLB." Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs & Co. will lead a group of underwriters. Virtually all major movie soundtracks throughout the world are encoded using Dolby's technologies, and virtually all DVD players incorporate its technologies.

Dolby Laboratories to Acquire Image Processing Tech Firm DemoGraFX

San Francisco -- Digital audio developer Dolby Laboratories announced on Monday that it will acquire the assets of DemoGraFX, a developer of specialized digital video signal processing and image coding technology. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The DemoGraFX technology development team will begin operating out of Dolby's Burbank facility, where it will focus on the development of specialized image processing technology that delivers visually superior imagery in a wide range of industry standard digital video entertainment formats. "Dolby's strategy is to deliver key signal processing solutions for entertainment applications," said Dolby Laboratories president Bill Jasper. "The DemoGraFX asset purchase is a perfect fit as we expand our technology, product and service businesses with very high quality image processing solutions that target important markets in entertainment."
