Dolby President & CEO Bill Jasper to Retire

San Francisco - Dolby Laboratories, the developer of audio and surround-sound technologies, said on Wednesday that Bill Jasper will retire as its president and CEO on March 27. Jasper, a 30-year executive with the company, will remain on the board of directors. He will be replaced by CFO Kevin Yeaman, who previously served as the CFO of E.piphany.

Dolby Looks to Bring 3D Technology to Blu-ray Movies, Games

San Francisco - Dolby Laboratories (NYSE: DLB) is in talks with content providers on integrating its digital 3D technology into Blu-ray movies and video games, Reuters reports. The technology would work using standard Blu-ray players and 3D glasses, along with 3D-enabled televisions from companies like Samsung or Mitsubishi.

Dolby to Acquire Coding Technologies for $250 Million

San Francisco - Dolby Laboratories (NYSE: DLB), a developer of audio and surround sound technology for cinema, broadcast, home audio systems and consumer electronics, announced on Friday that it will acquire Sweden-based Coding Technologies, a developer of audio compression technologies, for about $250 million.

Cinea Licenses Digital Watermarking Tech to News Corp.'s NDS

Reston, Va. - Cinea, a unit of Dolby Laboratories that provides content-protection technology to the movie and TV industries, announced on Tuesday that News Corp.'s NDS has licensed the company's forensic watermarking technology for use with its video-on-demand and live broadcast products. The technology will provide NDS' customers with the ability to embed invisible, unique product IDs in individual video streams, allowing tracking of pirated content back to its source.

Dolby Digital Cinema Equipment Tapped by China Film Institute

San Francisco - Dolby Laboratories announced on Thursday that the China Research Institute of Film Science & Technology will use its digital cinema technology in the country's first JPEG digital cinema mastering facility. The Dolby SCC2000 Secure Content Creator includes digital cinema compression, encoding, packaging and encryption capabilities.

Dolby Laboratories, Microsoft Bring Surround Sound to Xbox 360

San Francisco - Audio engineering firm Dolby Laboratories announced on Thursday that it partnered with Microsoft to include support for Dolby Digital surround sound for both games and movies played on the Xbox 360. For game play, the Xbox 360 will feature interactive Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound; the game console will also include Dolby Digital decoding for DVD video playback. Initial Xbox 360 titles that support the advanced audio technology include "NBA 2K6," "Call of Duty 2," "Tony Hawk's American Wasteland," "Need for Speed Most Wanted," "Perfect Dark Zero" and "Project Gotham Racing 3."
