New York - The New York Public Library has added the ability for its cardholders to download free movies through its eCollection online service, which is powered by technology from OverDrive and also offers music, audiobooks and e-books. The movies may be downloaded to a PC or laptop, and also transferred to certain portable devices. The online video library includes foreign films like "The Bicycle Thief" and Fellini's "8 1/2", documentaries, children's titles, IMAX films and various live performances of stage productions. Cleveland-based OverDrive said in March it is in negotiations with providers such as A&E Home Video to add content to its library movie download service, which is also available from the website of the Denver Public Library.

Burbank, Calif. - Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group announced on Thursday that it will become the first major studio to offer a downloadable version of a film on the same day as its DVD release, when it offers "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" through partner Free Record Shop in the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium. Along with "Harry Potter," FreeRecordShop.nl will offer nearly 100 Warner Bros. films as permanent downloads, including "Ocean's Twelve," "The Matrix" trilogy, "Casablanca" and "Doctor Zhivago". The movie download service from Free Record Shop, which operates 185 stores in the Netherlands, will deliver copy-protected films using Microsoft's Windows Media format. "We are excited to be the first studio to deliver secure and legal download-to-own films through the Internet simultaneous with the film's DVD debut," said Warner HEG president Kevin Tsujihara, adding that the service will "combat piracy by providing high quality, affordable and legal downloads."

Hong Kong - Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited (HKBN), a provider of broadband Internet access in Hong Kong, announced on Tuesday the launch of a free, legal movie promotional download site for all Hong Kong residents. The site is offering five Chinese films -- "Cocktail," "My Wife is 18," "Heat Team," "Tiramisu" and "Shiver" -- with a catch: there is an 18-minute download limit. HKBN said subscribers to its 100 Mbps service will be able to download a 4GB movie in under 7 minutes, while for subscribers to competing, slower services it will likely take over an hour.

New York - CBS Corporation's Showtime Networks announced on Friday that it has made its first Showtime Championship Boxing match available for purchase and download from Apple's iTunes Store. The March 4 world title unification bout between IBF/IBO super middleweight champion Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy and WBO champ Joe Calzaghe is now available in its entirety for $1.99.

Campbell, Calif. - Software developer Wingspan on Tuesday introduced its iLoad-c, a device that can download music from a wireless network operator's mobile music download store directly onto an Apple iPod Nano portable player. Campbell, Calif.-based Wingspan said the $199 device will initially be compatible with Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile networks when it ships by mid-summer. The company said it is also looking to enable Wi-Fi capability within the device. Wingspan's other products include iLoad, which copies CDs to an iPod without a computer, and iLoad-v, which records video and music from a cable or satellite TV set-top box directly onto an iPod.

Herndon, Va. - Ruckus, a provider of digital entertainment services to college campuses, said that it has joined the Michigan-based Internet2 consortium, and will collaborate with other members to develop and test new content distribution and authentication technologies. The company said that its membership also will allow it to provide students at its 208 member universities faster access to its multimedia service, which allows schools to legally access and share a digital library of classroom-related multimedia.

San Francisco - BitTorrent, a provider of peer-to-peer file sharing services, said on Tuesday that it will be supporting the 20th Annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Music and Media Conference and 13th Annual SXSW Film Conference and Festival. SXSW and BitTorrent plan to offer free downloads of music compilations and movie trailers. SXSWeek takes place March 10-19 in Austin, Texas.

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America announced on Tuesday that it plans to offer downloadable expansion packs for its "SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs" title for PlayStation 2. Beginning in March, players will be able to pay $5.99 to download a pack to a USB storage device, PlayStation 2 internal hard drive, or memory stick for PSP, which may then be added to the PlayStation 2 title. The Map Pack expansions were developed by Zipper Interactive, and produced by Sony's Foster City studio in association with the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Command.

Houston - The National Basketball Association (NBA) said on Thursday that it partnered with Sony Computer Entertainment America to offer Sony PSP owners a free download of video highlights from the 2006 NBA All-Star Game. Reston, Va. - Wireless network operator Sprint announced on Wednesday that it has become the first mobile music service in the U.S. to sell one million over-the-air downloads of full-length tracks to its subscribers. The service, which launched in October 2005, offers a catalog of 320,000 songs for $2.50 each -- which includes one copy of the song for the phone and another for the PC. "The popularity of the Sprint Music Store is due largely to its ability to instantly deliver the songs people want when they want them on their Sprint phone, the one device that is likely always with them. This feature along with the easy-to-use storefront appeals to a mass audience in addition to tech-savvy early adopters," said Jeff Hallock, vice president of product marketing for Sprint.

London - ntl, the U.K.'s largest cable company with 3.3 million cable TV subscribers and 1.7 million broadband customers, announced on Friday that it has partnered with peer-to-peer file-sharing software distributor BitTorrenet to test an ultra high-speed video download service in the U.K. The companies will work with CacheLogic to further accelerate the delivery of legal, licensed video content such as movies, music videos and TV programs. BitTorrent has long been a popular means of sharing pirated movies and TV shows, but recently the company negotiated with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to remove copyrighted content from its search engine. "As the world's leading P2P application, we are engaging artists and ISPs to build a consumer-friendly ecosystem around our protocol that allows all involved to benefit from P2P," said Ashwin Navin, co-founder and president of BitTorrent. The trial is expected to launch with ntl broadband subscribers in April.

The company will also enable players of its "Metroid Prime Hunters" game for DS to chat with one another before and after matches on the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the company's free Wi-Fi service that claims 850,000 unique users worldwide.

London - Ricky Gervais, creator of the BBC series "The Office," and his team have been awarded the Guinness World Record for creating the world's most-downloaded podcast. The podcasts, which consist of random discussions between Gervais and his friends Karl Pilkington and Stephen Merchant, are downloaded an average of 261,670 times per episode, Guinness said. Gervais said Pilkington and Merchant initially wanted to charge a pound for each podcast, but that he refused. "We've had nearly 3 million downloads so far," he said. "It's difficult doing a show with two people who won't talk to me now."

Home Entertainment Group announced on Monday that it has partnered with German media conglomerate Bertelsmann's Arvato Mobile unit to launch a German-language movie and TV show download service. In2Movies will utilize a peer-to-peer network to initially deliver more than 80 offerings, including "Batman Begins," "The O.C.," "Friends" and "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," as well as programming from local distributors and third-party content providers. Launching in March in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland, the service will use a centralized peer-to-peer network to ensure copyright protection and rights management, while a decentralized peer-to-peer network will deliver larger files like movies to users. Arvato Mobile has also partnered with major record labels Sony BMG and EMI to offer songs for download on its secure peer-to-peer network.
