Gimmie5Games Studio Gets Independence From Eidos

London - Video game publisher Eidos has sold back the rights to casual games studio Gimmie5games, which it acquired back in 2007, GamesIndustry.biz reported. The newly independent studio will continue to develop online and casual games.  "This is the best route for all parties involved," Gimmie5games general manager Matt Spall told GamesIndustry.biz. "We understand we're not the focus of Eidos' business right now, but we passionately believe in our business and this way the team here are free to explore new and exciting business opportunities."

London - Eidos, the game publisher responsible for franchises including "Tomb Raider," said on Monday that Time Warner Entertainment (NYSE: TWX) has purchased an additional 10 million shares of the company, bringing its total holding to 19.9% of Eidos, Reuters reported.

London - Video game publisher Eidos said on Monday that it signed a three-year deal with in-game advertising firm Double Fusion, which will serve ads within 10 upcoming Eidos game titles. Formats will include dynamically-served advertisements, which can be rotated or changed after games are released, as well as deep integrations and product placements.

Redwood City, Calif. - Video game publisher Eidos this week shipped its "Traxxpad: Portable Studio" title for the Sony PSP handheld to retailers. Developed by Definitive Studios, the game lets users create music using drum machines, samplers, sequencers and a mini-keyboard.

Turner's GameTap Debuts "Day-and-Date," Retail and Ad-Supported Titles

Atlanta - Turner Broadcasting announced on Tuesday that it will introduce new features at its GameTap subscription-based broadband games and entertainment site, to include the ability for subscribers to begin playing games on the same day they become available for sale at retail, or purchase them outright directly from GameTap. The first such "day-and-date" title available on GameTap will be Eidos' "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary." The service will also launch a rotating selection of free, ad-supported games. GameTap said its subscribers played more than 20 million games in 2006, or more than 54,000 per day.

YuMe Debuts Video Ads Inside Content Distributed on BitTorrent

Redwood City, Calif. - YuMe Networks, an ad network optimized for broadband video, announced on Monday the launch of a new video ad format that will be embedded within downloadable content from the BitTorrent file-sharing network. The company's technology measures how many people view the ads, how many times they view the ads, and whether they click through to sponsor sites. The first client for Redwood City, Calif.-based YuMe's ad format is game publisher Eidos, which will embed an ad for its upcoming "Tomb Raider" game within video files from game-focused cable TV network G4 distributed on BitTorrent.

Eidos to Publish Traxxpad Music Creation Application for Sony PSP

San Francisco - Video game publisher Eidos Interactive on Monday announced plans to publish Traxxpad, an application that adds pro music studio equipment to the Sony PSP handheld. Developed by Definitive Studios, the application allows users to create and mix their own tracks, using the PSP mic as a sampler and an included stock library of 1,000 drum machine, keyboard and other sounds. Traxxpad is slated for release in North America sometime in the spring.

Redmond, Wash. - Nintendo of America on Wednesday announced the roster of titles for its Wii video game console that are slated for release during the first quarter of 2007. The list includes the Nintendo-developed "Wii Play," similar to the "Wii Sports" title that ships with the console, as well as titles from Ubisoft ("Prince of Persia: Rival Swords," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"); Sega ("Sonic and the Secret Rings"); Eidos ("Bionicle Heroes"); and Electronic Arts ("The Godfather: Blackhand Edition," "SSX Blur," "Medal of Honor Vanguard"). The company added that it now offers 42 classic titles for download to the Wii via its Virtual Console service, and will release "Mario Kart 64" on the service next week.

San Francisco - U.K. game publisher Eidos, a unit of SCi Entertainment, said on Tuesday that it will publish "Battlestations: Midway" in early 2007, to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. The game is currently in development at Eidos Studios, Hungary for Xbox 360 and the PC.

Leipzig, Germany - Patrick O'Luanaigh, the former design director for U.K. video game publisher Eidos, announced this week at the Leipzig Games Convention that he will leave to form his own independent game development studio, GamesIndustry.biz reported. O'Luanaigh did not provide many details about nDreams Ltd., other than to say the company will "focus on improving the quality of storytelling in games."
