Smartphone Firm Palm to Raise $83.9M; Stock Jumps 15%

Sunnyvale, Calif. - Shares of smartphone maker Palm (NASD: PALM) rose 15% on Tuesday after the company said that it will raise $83.9 million in a public stock offering. Palm said that it will use the proceeds to strengthen its working capital position, as well as to launch its highly anticipated Palm Pre smart phone.

Los Angeles - Elevation Partners, the private equity firm whose partners include U2 singer Bono, announced on Wednesday its acquisition of SDI Media Group, a provider of foreign language subtitling and dubbing services for the entertainment industry, from Warburg Pincus.

The Venture Capital firm Elevation Partners, which has U2's singer Bono as one of five founders, buys 25 percent of wireless device maker Palm. The recapitalization deal also brings fresh management talent to the company - mostly from Apple.

Redwood City, Calif. - Video game publisher Electronic Arts on Monday named John Riccitiello as its new CEO, effective April 2.

WSJ: Rocker Bono, Former EA President Join VC Firm Elevation Partners

Dublin -- The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Bono, Irish rock star and lead singer of U2, has joined Elevation Partners, a venture capital firm focusing on entertainment and media projects, as a managing director. Technology investor Roger McNamee, former Electronic Arts President John Riccitiello and former Apple Computer CFO Fred Andersen have also joined the firm. Elevation told The Journal that the team was hoping to raise at least $1 billion for a new fund, for which details were not released.
