EMI Opts Out of Google Book Settlement, Challenges Terms

London - EMI Music Publishing has fully opted out of Google's (NASD: GOOG) proposed settlement with authors over its book-scanning project, and further argued that it should not have to provide Google with a list of the over one million copyrights it owns and does not wish Google to use, MediaBistro reports. Authors are free to opt out of having their works included in Google's massive digital book index.

EMI Music Publishing Forms Joint Venture With L.A. Reid

New York - EMI Music Publishing announced on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with veteran music executive Antonio "L.A." Reid to form a joint venture that will search out new songwriters. The L.A. Reid Music Publishing Company will see Reid -- who has previously served as chairman of Island Def Jam, CEO of Arista and co-founder of LaFace Records -- tasked with discovering and signing new and established songwriters to publishing deals.

Project Playlist Buys TotalMusic; Licenses Sony/ATV, EMI

Palo Alto, Calif. - Project Playlist, a social music site that lets users create and share song playlists, announced on Tuesday that it has acquired the assets and employees of TotalMusic, a digital catalog management and reporting system. TotalMusic was an initiative conceived by Sony BMG and Universal Music Group, which acquired the Ruckus campus music streaming service last year, but then shut down in February before launching any service.

ArtistDirect to Launch Lyrics Section; Licenses EMI, Universal

Santa Monica, Calif. - ArtistDirect, an online network focused on music and film, announced on Monday that it has signed lyrics licensing agreements with Universal Music Publishing and EMI Music Publishing, and plans to launch a new song lyrics section on its site in the fall.

XM Settles Suit With EMI Music Publishing Over Pioneer Inno

New York - XM Satellite Radio (NASD: XMSR) announced on Thursday that it has settled a lawsuit brought by EMI Music Publishing over the Pioneer Inno, a portable satellite radio with advanced recording features.

Slacker Signs Music Publishers for Interactive Radio Service

San Diego - Slacker, the maker of a portable music player and corresponding radio service, announced on Tuesday that it has signed agreements with EMI Music Publishing, Sony/ATV Music Publishing (NYSE: SNE), Universal Music Publishing Group and Warner/Chappell Music (NYSE: WMG), which will allow users to transfer songs from its online radio service to Slacker portable players. The company said the deals were completed before it launched its Slacker Portable hit the market in November. Slacker lets users create interactive radio stations; songs from the stations are then periodically updated on the portable player. A premium version that allows users to permanently store songs is also available starting at $7.50 per month.

The Orchard to Distribute Ringtones for EMI Music Publishing

New York - The Orchard, a provider of digital distribution services for independent music, announced on Monday that it has signed an agreement with the music publishing arm of major record label EMI Music. Under the deal, The Orchard will distribute master recording ringtones from EMI Music Publishing to mobile providers in the U.S. and Canada, through services including Dwango Wireless, 9 Squared, IAM Mobile, Mobilestreams, and Arvato Mobile and Hudson South.
