EA Signs Partnership Deals With Epic Games, Grasshopper Manufacture

Redwood City, Calif. - Gaming Giant Electronic Arts (EA) has signed two new partnership deals with independent games companies, including Gears of War publisher, Epic Games and the Japanese firm Grasshopper Manufacture.

Cary, N.C. - Video game publisher and game development tools provider Epic Games announced that it has acquired Utah-based game studio Chair Entertainment Group for an undisclosed sum.

Midway Games to Publish "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe"

Chicago - Midway Games (NASD: MWY) on Monday announced plans to publish "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe," licensed through Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the fall. The game will pit Mortal Kombat characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion against Batman, Superman and other DC characters. Separately, Midway said it will publish developer Epic Games' "Unreal Tournament 3" for Xbox 360 this summer. The game has already shipped more than one million units worldwide for the PlayStation 3 and PC.

"Gears of War 2" for Xbox 360 to Ship in November

San Francisco - Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) announced on Thursday that Epic Games will release "Gears of War 2," the follow-up to the 4.5 million-selling title for the Xbox 360, in November. The company also said that, before the launch of "Fable 2," a series of pub games will debut on Xbox Live that will feature elements that will carry over onto the Xbox 360 title when it is released.

Research Triangle Park, N.C. - Virtual Heroes, a developer of interactive learning applications for the federal systems, healthcare and commercial markets, said on Tuesday that it has licensed Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 for use in the development of serious games and advanced learning technologies. Virtual Heroes will use the Unreal Engine 3 in the development of its Dynamic Virtual Human Technology, which is targeted at the medical education and training market.

Agoura Hills, Calif. - Video game publisher THQ announced that it has licensed the Unreal Engine 3 game physics technology from North Carolina-based game publisher and technology developer Epic Games, for use in future THQ titles. Epic's Unreal Engine has been utilized in the creation of games including Ubisoft's "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell," Eidos' "Deus Ex" and "America's Army: Special Forces" from the U.S. Army.

Unreal Engine Creator Epic Games Acquires Rival Game Technology

Raleigh, N.C. -- Epic Games, a PC game publisher and developer of the Unreal video game physics engine, announced this week that it has acquired the Reality Engine, a competing game engine technology, from Artificial Studios. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. North Carolina-based Epic plans to discontinue sales of the Reality Engine, but will review its technologies for inclusion in its own Unreal Engine; it also offered current Reality users "significantly discounted prices" on Unreal. Separately, Epic announced on Friday that Korean online game developer NCsoft has licensed the Unreal Engine 3 for use in its titles, which include "Lineage."

"Unreal" Developer Epic Games Merges With Scion Studios

Raleigh, N.C. -- Epic Games, a developer of 3D game engine technology and titles including the "Unreal" PC multiplayer game series, announced that it has merged with fellow developer Scion Studios. Scion is responsible for titles including the U.S. Army's multiplayer title, "America's Army," which uses Epic's Unreal Engine technology. Former Scion CEO Michael V. Capps will head Epic's development and production management in his new role as president of Epic Games, while Epic chairman and CEO Tim Sweeney will retain his current roles. "This will increase Epic's ability to develop multiple games, including those in its award-winning Unreal franchise, internally for both PC and console platforms," the company said, in a statement.
