Authored by dmw on March 30, 2007 - 11:42am.
DMW Mixer Tomorrow evening from 7-10pm, DMW and The Deity Group will bring a first to the art world at The Venice Contemporary in Los Angeles.  Dubbed an Art Download Party, the event will bring together technology and the art world as never before.  Attendees with a cell phone or PDA (so, in other words, everyone) will be able to download free, exclusive content like wallpaper and ring tones from the artists and the band, Population Game, at the gallery.  Vector Mobile is running the download end, and the open bar (not a first in the art world, but always appreciated) will be provided by Red Bull, Effen Vodka, AGWA, and The Heroes.  Everyone’s welcome, but an RSVP is required...and we nearly have a full house right now, so get on it fast!  Hope to see you there!

500 Attendees Connected at the 2008 Digital Media Conference

Authored by Jay Baage on June 27, 2008 - 8:29am.
Thanks to everyone that made the 5th Annual Digital Media Conference yesterday Thursday, June 26, 2008 at the Ritz-Carlton in Tyson’s Corner, VA, into such a great event! Almost 500 people showed up for what truly has become a "must-attend" event for media, entertainment and technology businesses, investors, and policy-makers involved in the digital distribution of media and entertainment. We'll be back with vlogs, more pictures and editorial coverage of the event shortly.

Analysis: How to Speak at a Conference Without Getting Skewered on Twitter

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on June 2, 2008 - 7:50am.

I'm headed to NY this morning to speak at an IAB event dedicated to social media and user generated content. It's first of two events this month put on by large marketing bodies where the entire event is focused on social media (the second is OMMA Social in a few weeks). It's certainly a sign of the times that the topic has enough attention from top marketers to warrant two full day events in New York within weeks of one another. So with all this focus on social media from "mainstream" marketers, it seems like the perfect time to write about something I've been thinking about since being on an ill-fated panel at SXSW earlier this year ... how to speak at an event where the feedback channel is instant, unfiltered and sometimes brutal.

Media Executives Network and Do Deals at the LA Games Conference

Authored by Jay Baage on May 21, 2008 - 1:34pm.
Los Angeles – What constitutes a game these days? Are Facebook and LinkedIn ultimately games? Isn’t a professional gamer an oxymoron? There were many interesting questions that the around 300 attendees bombarded the panelists and speakers with during the first day of the LA Games Conference. The focus of this year’s event is “The Future of Connected Entertainment” and the fast growth and changing landscape of the games industry is certainly exciting for everyone involved. Make sure to check back for pictures, podcasts and video interviews from the event as soon as we have time to put it up.

Analysis: 6 Reasons Twitter Rocks and Sucks Simultaneously At SXSW

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on March 11, 2008 - 6:16am.

If last year's SXSW was Twitter's coming out party, this year it achieved utility status. A utility is something that is always on, and essential. To lose it would be to thrust yourself into the dark ages. Water, electricity, gas ... and Twitter. Sound like an exaggeration? Not for anyone who has spent the last few days watching the incessant live twittering at SXSW. Because not every reader is as tricked out in extreme geekdom as those at SXSW, here's a brief description of Twitter:

For those of you that are going, DMW is happy to once again bring you the hottest list of buzz bands and parties, courtesy of music publicist Fiona Bloom:

Television Leaders to Discuss Industry’s Future at Future of Television, March 24-25

Authored by Scott Goldberg on February 14, 2008 - 12:07pm.

While the WGA strike is now a memory, the immediate future of the television industry remains anything but clear. Uncertainty about the viability of online platforms as strong business models, questions about content on mobile platforms, and the increasing penetration of entertainment alternatives like video games and social media are only some of the issues. At the 2008 Future of Television Conference in Los Angeles on March 24-25, an extraordinary group of speakers will gather to evaluate the state of the industry, and discuss what lies ahead.

Analysis: 9 Ways to Stand Out As A Conference Speaker

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on February 6, 2008 - 9:51am.

Last Thursday, I spent the day at my first event of 2008 called the Social Networking Conference (SNC) in Miami to present a session called "Secrets of Creating Talkability." The event kicks of a string of speaking appearances I will be making over the next few months as I start to get ready for my book launch in March.

Analysis: Ticketmaster Leads Online Ticket Reselling Traffic For Hannah Montana

Authored by Heather Dougherty on January 16, 2008 - 9:11am.

Ticketmaster has purchased secondary market ticket seller TicketsNow.com (WSJ cites price of $265 million) in an effort to capture (and share with partner venues, artists, etc.) more revenue from ticket reselling. This move will help Ticketmaster compete more directly with StubHub, which eBay purchased in January 2007. Each of the two combinations are compelling – the market leader for ticket sales moving more aggressively into ticket reselling (Ticketmaster also operates Ticketexchange, a smaller service in terms of market share, to resell tickets), going against the online market leader for reselling almost anything.

Inside the 5 Badges of the Conference Caste System

Authored by Rohit Bhargava on January 14, 2008 - 7:58am.

At every conference or tradeshow, you get a badge. I have a box full of them on my desk, an increasing number of them with the title of "Speaker" affixed beneath my name. I recently had a conversation with some colleagues about the importance of being a speaker at an event. Often, the most important benefit is not just the visibility of speaking, but the license that speaker tag gives you to have a conversation with other speakers. If you think about it, the badges at a conference are like a caste system. Your badge identifies which group you belong in and can often dictate how people embrace or shy away from a conversation with you.

Online Video - The Key To The Media Castle in 2008?

Authored by Jay Baage on January 2, 2008 - 2:14pm.

While there are many areas of media that are going through changes, 2008 will be a particularly interesting year for the television industry. With YouTube already a household name, even the most notoriously defensive media giants have come to realize that online video is more than just an afterthought, in fact, it might just be the key to the new media castle.
