Wal-Mart Sheds Online Movie Download Business

Little Rock, Arkansas – Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has shuttered its online movie download service, the AP reports. The company launched the service in February with 3,000 titles, but customers could not watch them on an Apple Inc. device.

HBO to Tackle the Duke Rape Case

Mike Nifong, former Durham, NC District AttorneyHBO has acquired the rights to the book "Until Proven Innocent: Political Correctness and the Shameful Injustices of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case," written by Stuart Taylor Jr. and K.C. Johnson.  The book, about the prosecution of three Duke University lacrosse players for the gang rape of a stripper at a team party, was published by Thomas Dunne Books.

“Bourne Ultimatum” Sets August Box Office Record

Filmmaker Paul Greengrass' "The Bourne Ultimatum" nabbed the best August opening on record, outperforming the debut of any James Bond film as well as the previous two installments in Universal's Jason Bourne spy franchise.  The film drew an estimated $70.2 million taking the weekend crown.

Discovery Website Adds AFI Filmmaking Course for Classrooms

Los Angeles - Discovery Education's online unitedstreaming service on Monday debuted an online application developed by the American Film Institute to help teachers use filmmaking as a method to engage students in the learning process. "Lights, Camera, Education" was previously only available through training workshops run by AFI.

National Archives, Google Team to Put Historic Films Online

Washington - The National Archives in Washington and Internet search giant Google on Friday announced the launch of a pilot program that will digitize and make historic films available for free online. Under a non-exclusive deal, researchers and the general public will be able to access a collection of 103 historic movies, documentaries and other films from the National Archives through Google Video as well as the National Archives website. "For the first time, the public will be able to view this collection of rare and unusual films on the Internet," said Allen Weinstein, archivist of the United States. The National Archives and Google said that they are exploring the possibilities of expanding the online film collection and making the Archives' extensive textual holdings available through the Internet, as well.

N.Y. Times: "'King Kong' Blurs Line Between Films and Games"

Los Angeles - The New York Times recently reported on the hands-on role director Peter Jackson has taken in the creation of the video game based on his upcoming remake of "King Kong." In development at France's Ubisoft, with a budget of over $20 million, "Peter Jackson's King Kong" will feature elements created by Jackson specifically for the game, in addition to the voice talent of actors from the movie including Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody and Jack Black.

Report: 21% of U.S. Downloaders Have Grabbed Feature-Length Film

New York -- In a sign that films are becoming more popular on peer-to-peer networks, one-fifth (21%) of U.S. downloaders aged 12 and older reported having downloaded a feature-length film over the Internet, according to a survey conducted in late 2003 by marketing research firm Ipsos-Insight. Further, nearly one out of ten (9%) had done so in the past 30 days. "Clearly, digitally experienced Americans are beginning to demand increasingly diverse formats of entertainment to be available via the Internet," said Ipsos-Insight senior analyst Matt Kleinschmit. The survey also found that nearly two-fifths (38%) of American downloaders have downloaded a music video from the Internet, with 15% reporting having done so in the last 30 days.
