Buzz Watch: Lonely Planet on PSP

Authored by Jay Baage on October 31, 2006 - 1:11pm.
Surfing the blogosphere this morning, I came across the release of Lonely Planet travel guides on Sony Playstation Portable, PSP. This is a great example of innovative new ways of delivering traditional content on new media platforms. This marriage makes a lot of sense, especially since Sony reportedly is pimping up the PSP with GPS hardware and software, due to be released in Japan in December. Which backpacker would not want a sweet PSP along for the ride now?

Jonathan Abrams, the founder of Friendster, apparently had difficulty with it himself. “Basically,” said Mark J. Pincus, a seed investor of Friendster, in the New York Times, “Jonathan wanted to meet girls.” And as if that didn’t sell poor Jonathan down the river enough, Pincus added, “He told me himself, he started Friendster as a way to surf through his friends’ address books for good-looking girls.”

San Francisco, CA - Apple Computer does not fear competition from Microsoft's new Zune music player, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in an interview in this week’s edition of Newsweek. He refers to demonstrations that he has seen of Zune’s interface which he viewed as complicated and not user friendly enough. Jobs especially thinks this when it comes to sharing music wirelessly between Zune users, a feature that has been mentioned as one of Zune’s main competitive advantages over the current generation of iPod’s.

London - Police have blamed a sharp increase in the number of street robberies in the U.K. on the increasing popularity of iPods, MP3 players and 3G mobile phones. According to the British Home Office, street robberies in some parts of Britain have increased by 40%, with children and students being the main victims of "gadget" crime. Between April and June this year, London Police recorded more than 1,500 robberies, a 15% increase. According to the Metropolitan police, the theft of iPods alone has risen fivefold since last November.
