Authored by Jay Baage on May 22, 2007 - 2:01pm.
Disney Slide From the Games & Mobile Forum: The panel on the State of the Mobile Games Industry panel discussed the huge opportunities for game developers that exist on a mobile platform, but also the continued limitations of shelf-space on the major carriers decks as well as the low awareness of mobile game products.
“The only way to make money (on developing mobile games) right now  is to get this mega super hit “, says Stan Liu, VP, Mobile Content Development, The Walt Disney Internet Group.

Forget the Image of the Gamer as Teen Male Geek

Authored by Scott Goldberg on May 22, 2007 - 12:03pm.
Gamer Geek From the Games & Mobile Forum: A pervasive theme between the first two keynoters at the Games & Mobile Forum, Jill Braff of Glu Mobile, and John Welch of PlayFirst: Gamers are Geeks No More.  Each traced the evolution of games from ancient man to the genesis of the first mainstream console, the Atari.  At some point, said Jill Braff, developers built games targeted to a hardcore audience, who returned the favor by purchasing those games and filling the pockets of manufacturers, leading to more hardcore game innovation.  In essence a cul-de-sac, as she said, was formed.  The “casual” gamer who valued the simplicity of the arcade, Donkey Kong, card games – ie, Casual Games – was forgotten.  Game immersion, technological progress, and intense storylines became the focus.

Games and Mobile Forum: Who will Create a YouTube for Games?

Authored by Jay Baage on May 22, 2007 - 11:18am.
John Welch From the Games & Mobile Forum: An interesting discussion that John Welch, Playfirst's President and CEO, as well as several of the morning panels, touched upon is if the Games Industry will go the same way as the music and television industry? Will we see a YouTube for Games soon?

Why Big Media is Taking Interest in Casual & Mobile Games

Authored by Scott Goldberg on May 21, 2007 - 9:30pm.
GMF From the Games & Mobile Forum: A panel including executives from DIRECTV, CNET, Playboy, and Yahoo discussed the reasons their companies are involved in games this afternoon at the Games & Mobile Forum.  The clear bottom line: Gamers aren’t defined as teenage boys in their parent’s basement any longer, said Kitt McCurdy, GameSpot analyst at CNET.  “We have a registered user base of 8 million people,” she said, “and we’re seeing more women gamers, more older gamers, more younger gamers.  Gamers today include anybody.”  The mainstream, ubiquitous presence of games in every day lives, the speed of access, and the variety of platforms is making it easier for large media companies to justify entering the space, and doing so with deep pockets.

Games and Mobile Forum: The Traditional Game Consoles are Doomed, the New Model is Free on the Internet

Authored by Jay Baage on May 21, 2007 - 3:10pm.
GamesandMobile2007-1.jpg From the Games & Mobile Forum: The first two panels of the day at Digital Media Wire’s Games and Mobile Forum 2007 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel discussed the hot topic of social networking as it relates to games on different platforms. The social revolution that is occurring in gaming now has just started and no one knows where it is going, but the panelists seem to hint at that the consoles are doomed.
