Redwood City, Calif. - Looking to expand its offerings for mobile phones, Electronic Arts, the developer and publisher of video games, said late Thursday that it plans to acquire Los Angeles-based Jamdat Mobile, a publisher of wireless entertainment content, for approximately $680 million in cash. The two companies together plan to publish over 50 games for mobile phones in the first year following completion of the deal, including such titles as "Tetris," "Bejeweled," "Need For Speed" and "Madden NFL 06." Jamdat has 350 employees at offices in Honolulu, Montreal, Tokyo, London, Bucharest and Hyderabad. Mitch Lasky, Jamdata's CEO, will lead EA's mobile games business worldwide.

Beijing -- Chinese wireless entertainment distributor C-Valley on Wednesday received strategic investments from two American firms, Los Angeles-based Jamdat Mobile and Calabasas Hills, Calif.-based THQ Wireless -- both also distributors of mobile games. The financial details of the investments were not disclosed. Both companies will benefit from having their wireless game titles distributed in China through C-Valley, which has relationships with leading Chinese mobile operators China Mobile and China Unicom. Other C-Valley investors include Japan's Access Co., a mobile content delivery provider, and mobile game developer Tose Co.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Founded in 2003, Downtown Wireless has developed a number of casino titles, including "Downtown Texas Hold 'Em," "Downtown Video Slots" and "Downtown Roulette." "The acquisition of Downtown Wireless is consistent with Jamdat's strategy to build value from a slate of owned intellectual properties," said Jamdat chairman and CEO Mitch Lasky. Los Angeles-based Jamdat went public in September 2004 in an IPO that raised $61 million.

New York -- The National Basketball Association (NBA) on Wednesday announced the launch of "NBA Unwired," a wireless sports service that will offer video highlights, games and other features through partnerships with Nokia and game developers THQ Wireless and Jamdat Mobile. Through its relationship with Nokia, the NBA will offer video highlights of every NBA game, in addition to scores and statistics on select Nokia handsets for $4.99 per month. THQ Wireless will release the first official NBA wireless fantasy basketball game, "NBA Fantasy Five," as well as a 5-on-5 NBA wireless simulation game, "NBA Basketball 2005," and a wireless game tracker application called "NBA Courtside Live Mobile." The company will also publish ringtones featuring NBA players including Chris Webber, Richard Jefferson and Jermaine O'Neal. NBA Unwired will also feature Jamdat Mobile's two-on-two wireless game, "Jamdat Sports NBA 2005."

The company's stock finished at $22.51 on Wednesday, the first day of trading; its market capitalization is now $439 million. Proceeds from the offering are estimated to be $88.8 million. Los Angeles -- Jamdat Mobile, a developer and publisher of wireless entertainment content, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $11 million in its fourth round of venture capital financing from Benchmark Capital. Los Angeles-based Jamdat said it achieved profitability earlier this year, but will use the additional capital to enhance its content portfolio and expand its worldwide distribution. The company, which provides its wireless games and other content to wireless network operators, opened a European office earlier this year and also acquired Montreal-based Hexacto Games. Other investors in the company have included Apax Partners, Qualcomm, Intel and Sun Microsystems.
