Seattle - Online game developer and publisher WildTangent has shuttered its internal development studio and laid off 20 of its employees, TechFlash reports.

Palo Alto, Calif. - Specialty finance firm Hercules Technology Growth Capital said on Tuesday that it has provided $20 million in debt financing to Redmond, Wash.-based online gaming network WildTangent. The company powers game services for PC manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Toshiba and Gateway, as well as a growing number of vertical sites and portals.

Report: 217 Million Online Gamers Worldwide

London - One in four Internet users worldwide are online gamers, or a total of nearly 217 million people, according to a new report from Internet measurement firm comScore.

WildTangent, an online Games Network, today announced the appointment of AJ Redmer to Executive Vice President of WildTangent Studios. Redmer joins WildTangent from Microsoft Game Studios where he was most recently General Manager of Microsoft Game Studios Asia. During his seven years at Microsoft he oversaw the development and publishing of Microsoft branded entertainment products for Windows, Xbox and Xbox 360, where he was part of the original team that created the leading gaming platform.

WildTangent Adds Sponsors to Pay-for-Play Game Sessions

Redmond, Wash. - Online casual games publisher WildTangent said on Monday that a number of new advertisers have signed on to sponsor its pay-for-play game sessions, allowing gamers to play for free in exchange for viewing ads. The company's WildCoins let gamers pay as little as $0.25-$1.50 per session to play online game titles; these games can now be played for free if gamers choose to instead view ads from partners including Discovery Networks, Sony Pictures, Acuvue, Suzuki Motors and Warner Bros. Redmond, Wash.-based WildTangent claims 6.5 million unique gamers per month.

Redmond, Wash. - Online game publisher WildTangent announced on Tuesday that it has received an undisclosed strategic investment from WPP, which owns a number of large advertising and public relations agencies.

WildTangent to Bundle Casual Games on Toshiba Laptops

Los Angeles - Online games publisher WildTangent said on Wednesday that it signed a deal with Toshiba to bundle its virtual gaming console application and five casual games on select Toshiba Satellite notebook computers. The Toshiba Games virtual console connects to a website that offers 250 casual and family game titles. WildTangent said its branded consoles are now bundled on over 60% of all new PCs in North America.

Online Game Technology Developer WildTangent Raises $16.5 Million

Redmond, Wash. -- WildTangent, a provider of online game development technology and online gaming support services, announced on Thursday that it has raised $16.5 million in its fourth round of venture capital financing. Advanced Technology Ventures led the investment round; Greylock Ventures, Madrona Venture Group, New Millennium Group, IDG Ventures, Venture Law Group and Washington Mutual also participated. Redmond, Wash.-based WildTangent has developed games used as a form of advertising for customers including Coca-Cola, Nike, GM and Samsung. The company will use the funds for international expansion, research and development, and marketing efforts.

WildTangent Launches Online Game Titles for Nike, Fox Sports, FX Networks

Redmond, Wash. -- WildTangent, an online game publisher and provider of online game technology, announced on Thursday that it has created new games for websites operated by Nike, Fox Sports and FX Networks. For Nike, WildTangent developed "Magia," a three-on-three online soccer game featuring real-life soccer stars and online tournaments that will be offered for free at NikeFootball.com. Redmond, Wash.-based WildTangent also announced the release of FoxSports.com's "Hit the Pros 2003," the latest version of its game that lets batters swing at real pitches from major league pitchers, as analyzed from in-game cameras on the field. Finally, for FX Networks WildTangent created an online game to promote its upcoming series, "Lucky," as well as a video game-style presentation for the network to show prospective advertisers as part of the TV industry's traditional "upfront" presentation. "Today's announcements demonstrate that online games are truly an effective and immersive advertising medium with unlimited potential to uniquely connect brand marketers to millions of consumers worldwide," said WildTangent CEO Alex St. John.
