Report: Chinese Online Games Market to Triple in Five Years

Shanghai - China’s online video game market is expanding rapidly, with sales forecasted to grow from $1.7 billion in 2007 to $6 billion in 2012, according to a survey released by Niko Partners today.
“This market is attractive because it is leading the way for online games,” said Lisa Cosmas Hanson, managing partner of Niko Partners, according to VentureBeat.

Electronic Arts to Launch Retooled Online Game Distribution Service

San Jose, Calif. - Video game publisher Electronic Arts has redesigned its online game download service, the Associated Press reported. The old EA Downloader service will be replaced by EA Link, which will initially offer a selection of 16 PC games for download, with new PC titles from EA to be added day and date with their release on disc in retail stores.

College Students Create "Fantasy Congress" Online Game

Los Angeles - A group of college students has created an online game where players create a "fantasy team" of U.S. lawmakers and compete to see whose team of policy makers is most effective, Reuters reported. The "Fantasy Congress" game was created with $5,000 in prize money from a school-sponsored entrepreneurship award. "If people cared about politics as much as they care about sports, we'd have a better democracy," Andrew Lee, a senior at Claremont McKenna College and a developer of the game, told Reuters.

Sony Names PlayStation 3 Launch Titles, Details Online Game Service

Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America this week announced its roster of more than 20 launch titles for the PlayStation 3, which goes on sale in North America on Nov. 17, and detailed the online and network services the company will offer for the next-generation game console.

Report: 56% of 117 Million U.S. Active Gamers Play Online; 64% are Women

Los Angeles - A new report estimates that there are 117 million active games (defined as those who play upwards of five hours per week) in the U.S., more than half of whom (56%) play online games. Of all online gamers, the report from Nielsen Entertainment found that 64% are women. While teenagers still comprise the largest share of online gamers (40%), Nielsen found that 8%, or nearly 15 million active gamers, are 45 or older.

Tabloid Fantasy League Launches Online Game Based on Star Photos

Kansas City, Mo. - The Tabloid Fantasy League on Tuesday announced the launch of its service that ranks stars based on how many times their photos appear in People, In Touch, Us Weekly and Star magazines, and lets users create a "celebrity dream team" to compete against others. The company said each team must consist of at least two actors, one model, one musician, two men and six "wildcard" choices.

CDC Games to Distribute "Lord of the Rings" Online Game in China

Beijing - CDC Games, a unit of the company that operates Chinese Web portal China.com, announced on Tuesday an agreement with game developer Turbine, to distribute "The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar" in China. The game is slated to launch in the U.S. and Europe in 2007, and has attracted 200,000 beta participants. Beijing-based CDC Games also operates the online game "Yulgang," which exceeded 30 million registered players in the second quarter.

Xfire Hits 5 Million Users for PC Game Online Community Service

Menlo Park, Calif. - Xfire, a recent $102 million acquisition of Viacom's MTV Networks that provides a free, ad-supported online community for over 600 PC games, announced on Friday that it now counts over 5 million users. Menlo Park, Calif.-based Xfire's service includes in-game messaging, voice chat, friend tracking, peer-to-peer file downloading and a game server browser.

Report: Online Game Market to Grow to $4.4 Billion in North America

The online game market in will grow from $1.1 billion in 2005 to $4.4 billion by 2010 in North America, according to a new study conducted by Parks Associates, a Dallas-based market research and consulting company. Currently PC gamers spend an average of 18.5 hours playing each week - more than console (13.6 hours), portable (8.9 hours), or mobile games (4.6 hours). Of those PC gamers, 70% play some form of multiplayer online game. Additional findings and data from the report will be discussed in detail at the upcoming Austin Game Conference.

Beijing - China.com's CDC Games announced on Tuesday that it has acquired a license from Japanese game publisher DigiPark, to operate the company's "Stone Age 2" online game in China. Financial terms were not disclosed. CDC Games, whose "Yulgang" online game claims over 30 million registered users in China, said the new title from DigiPark is expected to launch in the first quarter of 20007.
