Sony's Net Profit Plummets 95%, Games Division In Particular Disappoints

Tokyo, Japan - In line with what the company announced last week, electronics and media giant Sony today reported its first annual losses in 14 years on Thursday. The net loss amounts to Y10.4 billion ($115.6 million) for the October-December 2008 period, which represents a 95% drop in profits when compared the same period the previous year. The biggest disappointment came from the games division, which reported a 97% drop in operating profit, to Y400 million ($4.4 million), mainly due to declining sales of PS3, PS2 and PSP hardware and PS2 and PSP software.

EA, Weather Channel to Provide Live Weather Conditions on Football Game

Redwood City, CA - In what's believed to be an industry first, Redwood City-based game developer and publisher Electronic Arts (EA) said that it has teamed with The Weather Channel to offer real-time weather conditions and updates in its newly released NCAA Football 08 game. The latest version of the popular college football game will use information from The Weather Channel Interactive (TWCI) -- transmitted through the Internet -- to reflect accurate, real-time weather conditions at NCAA stadiums.

Federal agents on Wednesday raided businesses, storefronts, and residences in 16 states in a crackdown on the importation of illegal devices used to play counterfeit video games, InformationWeek reported.

With three seasons on MTV and two films, the video game medium seems a logical move for the boys, and the pictures (see below) foretell a game that won’t fall short on the customary Jackass shock value. MLB 07 - 2 Here’s the thing about sports games: When a game makes a huge leap forward graphically, like MLB ’06 on PS2, it’s difficult to take it much further the following year.  So the focus instead turns to improvements on game play, and in that sense, MLB ’07: The Show doesn’t disappoint.  The new game, to be released February 27, features some interesting twists: For starters, the Online League Play mode, which is basically organized like Fantasy Baseball, allows players to draft a squad, maintain detailed stats, and compete with up to 30 other teams.   


Activision's "MTV's Pimp My Ride" Game Ships to Retailers

Minneapolis - Activision Publishing on Tuesday released its "MTV's Pimp My Ride" title for PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360. The game features the voice and likeness of show host Xzibit, as well as several tracks from the hip-hop artist's recently released album.

Sony Names Jack Tretton President of U.S. Game Unit

Tokyo - Sony Computer Entertainment, the unit responsible for the PlayStation and the company's other video game products, announced on Thursday that it has named Jack Tretton as president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, replacing Kaz Hirai, who has been named president and group chief operating officer of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Ziff Davis to Discontinue Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine

San Francisco - Ziff Davis Game Group, the publisher of Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, announced on Wednesday that it will discontinue publication of the magazine after the January 2007 issue. The nine-year-old magazine was licensed by Sony exclusively for print, which Ziff Davis said no longer fits the company's strategic vision.

Sunnyvale, Calif.- Video game publisher RedOctane, the unit of Activision responsible for the "Guitar Hero" music game franchise, announced on Friday that it plans to release a wireless guitar controller compatible with the PlayStation 2 versions of the game. The $59 accessory is slated to ship in the fall of 2006. "Guitar Hero II" is set for release on Nov. 7.

"WWE Smackdown vs. RAW" Game Added to Sony Greatest Hits

Agoura Hills, Calif. -Video game publishers THQ and Jakks Pacific said on Monday that their "WWE Smackdown vs. RAW" title has been added to Sony's "Greatest Hits" collections for the PlayStation 2 and PSP, signifying sales of 400,000 and 250,000, respectively. THQ and Jakks are embroiled in several lawsuits with WWE over the wrestling game license, which WWE is seeking to have revoked and claims was obtained through a "commercial bribery scheme."

New York - 2K Sports, a unit of video game publisher Take-Two Interactive, on Tuesday shipped its "NHL 2K7" title for PlayStation 2 to retailers. Separately, the company announced the release of the album soundtrack to its "NBA 2K7" game. Produced by Dan the Automator, the album on Decon Records and distributed by Caroline includes tracks featuring Fabolous, Mos Def and Ghostface.
