GamePro analyst Michael Pachter says it was development difficulties on Sony’s PlayStation 3 that forced Take-Two to delay Grand Theft Auto IV for both PS3 and Xbox 360.  "We think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognize how far away from completion the game truly was until recently," Pachter said in a statement.

The Xbox 360 has overtaken the Nintendo Wii as the most searched for gaming console based on share of US Internet searches for the first time since the Wii’s launch in November 2006. The Xbox 360 is #1 console based on sales volume but the Wii has enjoyed the fastest growth in market share. We often find that Internet searches are a leading indicator and can be predictive of future sales growth.

Cell Phone Makers Haven't Learned from Wii & the Console War

Authored by Scott Goldberg on June 10, 2007 - 8:26pm.
Wii controller What would the video game industry look like today if the PS3 had launched without the Wii?  Would Thursday’s announced layoff of 100 employees at Sony Computer Entertainment have happened?  Would everyone own a PS3?  We’ll never know, but the scrap heap of a console launch gone awry seems to have had no bearing on the mobile industry’s thinking, and that’s a mistake.  After all, where are we right now in mobile hardware?  An over-priced, over-hyped shiny black device is about to hit the market, and instead of a Wii-like phone to steal the thunder, it has the luxury of a spotlight that has shined brightly since January.  That device, of course, is the iPhone.

Authored by Scott Goldberg on May 17, 2007 - 9:50am.
Console Wars The beauty of competition dictates that a healthy, well-positioned entity will react positively to the advancements of its foes.  In the video game industry, the gaming public is fortunate to have three such competitors, all on solid footing, competing for its attention.  Sony held a three-day media event this week to demonstrate its latest wares, and for the PS3, the 2007 holiday season outlook is strong.

PlayStation 3 UK Launch - Top Searched Console but Muted Enthusiasm

Authored by Heather Hopkins on March 20, 2007 - 1:13pm.

The PlayStation 3 launches in the UK on Friday and so we did some analysis of search data to get a sense for demand. The PS3 was the most searched for console last week, edging out the Nintendo Wii. However, searchers seem to be price sensitive and are comparing prices to other markets. Also, the volume of searches is lower than when the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii launched.

Spotlight: A Discussion about the Games Industry with IGN

Authored by Scott Goldberg on March 14, 2007 - 2:46pm.
IGN Logo At GDC I met three executives from IGN, the internet media and services provider: Jamie Berger, VP & GM; Nick Williams, Marketing Manager with GamerMetrics; and Scott Mucci, Product Manager for Customer Intelligence.  It goes without saying these boys know games.  They were kind enough to share their insights and opinions about the industry’s current state and near future, and they’re in a good position to know.  IGN, a unit of Fox Interactive Media, owns GameSpy, TeamXbox, GameStats, Rotten Tomatoes, and GamerMetrics, among others.  What I learned more than anything else is that 2007 will go down as one of the most interesting the industry has had to date, if not the most.  Here are some excerpts from our conversation.

GDC: Taking a Look at Playstation Home

Authored by Jay Baage on March 9, 2007 - 11:28am.

I was going to do a "Buzz Watch" on Playstation Home, however, there is just not enough buzz. This trailer gives you a pretty good idea of what it is all about. It seems like Sony is doing the right thing here, but it just does not feel that exciting. I don't know if this looks that much different from the Second Life world, but what is interesting is how much positive WofM that PS3 has lost to the XBox 360 and the Wii. And why do the already creepy avatars have to be dancing all the time, making everything even more ackward?
