Seattle - Social music discovery service iLike announced on Tuesday that it has surpassed one million registered users. The service includes an iTunes plug-in that monitors what users are listening to and provides personalized recommendations, as well as alerts on local concerts. The company said it is now processing over 200 million monthly track plays by its users. Seattle-based iLike also operates the indie music community GarageBand.com and personal broadcasting service Gcast.com. San Francisco - GarageBand.com, an online community for aspiring artists and fans of independent music, on Monday announced the launch of a talent contest that will give unsigned artists radio airplay on U.S. FM stations. Sponsored by Cingular Wireless, the GarageBand Faceoff will air clips of the most popular entries on a four-minute weekday afternoon radio show heard on stations including WFNY, KITS, WYSP and WKRK. Listeners will be able to vote for the better of two bands via SMS and Web voting, with the winner to return the next day to face another challenger. A recording contract with Capitol Records will be awarded to the grand prize winner on Dec. 18.

Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft announced on Tuesday that its MSN Music digital download store and music service has partnered with independent music site GarageBand.com to offer free downloads, radio and other content from unsigned artists. MSN Music will feature a GarageBand.com page highlighting five up-and-coming musicians from the site's online community of over 100,000 musicians, as well as a streaming music station featuring its artists. MSN Music will also offer a large portion of the 1.7 million songs from the former MP3.com archive, acquired by GarageBand.com in April. MSN Music will initially offer 150,000 free MP3.com tracks through a link on its site.
