Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft-owned game developer Bungie Studios announced on Thursday that its "Halo 2" game has now amassed 5 million players on the Xbox Live online game service, two and a half years after its launch. The company added that it is nearing 700 million unique multiplayer games on Xbox Live, as well as 5 billion player-games -- where each game counts once per player in it. Microsoft's Entertainment Unit Posts First Profit on Strong "Halo 2" SalesAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on January 28, 2005 - 5:28am.
Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft said that strong sales of its "Halo 2" video game for its Xbox console helped to bring its entertainment division into the black two years earlier than expected, and more than double its quarterly profit. Microsoft's entertainment division saw revenue of $126 million for the quarter, compared with a loss of $213 million during the same period last year. Over 6.3 million copies of "Halo 2" have now been sold, generating $300 million for the company's games division, which saw a profit of $84 million compared to a loss of $397 million a year earlier. The game's sales also helped offset slightly weaker sales for its PC games and Xbox consoles. However, Microsoft investor relations manager Curt Anderson told the Los Angeles Times that Xbox shipments are already approaching targets set to be met six months from now, while noting that profitability for the company's games unit isn't expected until 2007.
Report: "Halo 2," "Grand Theft Auto" Push November Game Sales Up 11%Authored by Mark Hefflinger on December 10, 2004 - 3:17am.
Los Angeles -- U.S. video game sales grew 11% in November, with two titles accounting for 30% of all games sold during the month, according to a Reuters report that cited data from NPD Group. Without 3.3 million in sales for Microsoft's "Halo 2" and 1.5 million for Take-Two Interactive's "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," overall sales would have fallen 21% during November, compared with last year's figures. Even with the two top-sellers, November game sales growth was still lower than what analysts had expected. The NPD data also showed that sales of Microsoft's Xbox console grew 52% compared with November 2003, while Sony's PlayStation 2 saw an 18% decline.
Microsoft's "Halo 2" Xbox Game Sees $125 Million in First Day SalesAuthored by Mark Hefflinger on November 12, 2004 - 7:16am.
Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft announced this week that its anticipated "Halo 2" game for the Xbox sold 2.38 million units in its first 24 hours of release, generating a record $125 million for the company. A Microsoft vice president had predicted earlier in the week that the game would take in $100 million in its first day, but the $125 million take eclipsed even the opening weekend box office for the first "Spider-Man" movie, which made $114 million over three days.
