Mark Cuban: When you succeed with Free, you are going to die by Free

Authored by Mark Cuban on July 6, 2009 - 5:41am.

The problem with companies who have built their business around free is that it is far from free to remain successful. The more success you have in delivering free, the more expensive it is to stay at the top. The more success you have, the more important it is to management to remain successful.  The more important remaining successful is to management, the more money they will spend, the more chances they will take, the more infrastructure they will build, the more people they will hire.  All of the things that will prevent them from staying lean , mean and flexible. All of the things that distract them from innovating within their core competency.

Mark Cuban: Cable TV is Winning the Battle Against Internet Delivered TV

Authored by Mark Cuban on March 25, 2009 - 1:00pm.

I love this on going discussion. Of course all of you who think that the OPEN internet will be the primary platform for the delivery of traditional tv content are wrong :) . But hey, thats what makes a market. Before I get into dismissing some of the traditional arguments why Online TV will take over, let me start you with one that hasn’t been used. Rural Broadband.

Mark Cuban: A Note to the MPAA - Piracy Is Collateral Damage

Authored by Mark Cuban on August 4, 2008 - 7:15am.

The Motion Picture Association of America is doing their best to follow in the footsteps of their brethren at the RIAA and make business harder for its members. They, Im guessing at the direction of some lawyers of their member companies, want to try to make cable and satellite companies shut off the "analog hole" when showing movies that are being released to TV prior to their DVD release. In the MPAA's own words "Distribution over insecure outputs would facilitate the illegal copying and redistribution of this high value content, causing untold damage to the DVD and other 'downstream' markets."

Mark Cuban: My Pittsburgh FCC Presentation on the Future of Digital Media

Authored by Mark Cuban on July 22, 2008 - 10:44am.

The future of any technology can be defined by the economic opportunities it creates. One just look around Pittsburgh to see the explosion in the number of businesses built around advances in medical technology to see the importance of entrepreneurs focusing on new technology. The impact has been enormous. Which brings us to today. What are the opportunities in front of us to get excited about in the digital media field?

Mark Cuban: The Way to Save Internet Video

Authored by Mark Cuban on July 14, 2008 - 7:20am.

There is a lot of money being spent trying to turn internet video into something its not. Its not TV. It's certainly not going to be HDTV. What is shocking about the entire attempt to turn the internet into a tv/HDTV distribution medium is how much people lie to themselves about what is actually happening.

Mark Cuban: All Your Videos Belong to Us

Authored by Mark Cuban on May 29, 2008 - 6:35am.

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the Ala Carting of Video on the Net. The premise was very simple. To paraphrase an old saying, "If you give away the milk for free, there is no need to buy the cow". If you give away your best stuff on an ala carte basis, then the value of everything that depended on that "stuff" declines. Some folks agreed, others searched for ways to disagree. Many in their responses seemed to think that because I own HDNet that I am biased and my judgement is clouded. In fact, its the exact opposite.

Mark Cuban: Bill O'Reilly Is Just a Wonderful, Confused Guy

Authored by Mark Cuban on November 12, 2007 - 10:27am.
I've grown to love Bill OReilly. Seriously. If there is anyone who can publicize a political movie, its Bill and I truly appreciate that about him. Magnolia Pictures and HDNet Films' Redacted premiered last week as part of HDNet's Ultra VOD program. With HDNet Ultra VOD movies premiere first in Hotels and on cable and satellite VOD systems PRIOR to making their national theatrical premieres. HDNet Movies will also show a sneak preview on Nov 14th, 2 days before the Nov 16th theatrical release.

Mark Cuban: Being 49 Years Old And Dancing is Exhausting!

Authored by Mark Cuban on October 8, 2007 - 6:28am.
Tonight Kym and I dance the Jive. This past week has been different than the past weeks of practicing in so many ways. We didnt get our song till Tuesday night, meaning we had 6 days. The same as everyone else of course, but dang. Knowing that Monday night is going to get here a lot faster than ever before definitely gave me a lot to think about.

Dan Rather Sues CBS, Viacom, & Three Execs for $70 Million

Authored by Scott Goldberg on September 19, 2007 - 9:50am.
Dan Rather is suing CBS, Viacom, Leslie Moonves, Sumner Redstone, and Andrew Heyward for the situation surrounding his firingNew York - Through his attorneys at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, Dan Rather has sued CBS, Viacom, and executives Leslie Moonves, Sumner Redstone, and Andrew Heyward for $70 million.  Rather is seeking damages caused by his discredited report about President Bush’s National Guard service, which led to his firing.  He believes the parties involved in the suit made him a scapegoat, and that his termination violated his contract.

Mark Cuban: The Internet is Still Dead and Boring

Authored by Mark Cuban on August 27, 2007 - 12:54am.
I obviously hit a nerve with my last post. My index for quality of post has evolved to the number of "you suck", "broadcast.com sucks", "You got lucky", etc posts that are submitted but never confirmed. For this post it was off the charts. Good. When people resort to personal comments. Its usually a good sign.

Mark Cuban: The Internet is Dead and Boring

Authored by Mark Cuban on August 26, 2007 - 10:40am.
A lot of people are all up and upset about my comments that the Internet is dead and boring. Well guess what, it is. Every new technological, mechanical or intellectual breakthrough has its day, days, months and years. But they don't rule forever. That's the reality. Every generation has its defining breakthrough. Cars, TV, Radio, Planes, highways, the wheel, the printing press, the list goes on forever. I'm sure in each generation to whom the invention was a breakthrough it may have been heretical to consider those inventions "dead and boring". The reality is that at some point they stop changing. They stop evolving. They become utilities or utilitarian and are taken for granted.

Mark Cuban: The Internet Is Dead, Long Live The Intranet

Authored by Mark Cuban on July 29, 2007 - 10:45am.
For some reason the fact that intranets can significantly outperform Internets and in particular THE Internet is a shocking concept. It shouldn't be. An intranet is a contained network managed to optimize the performance to meet the needs of the participants on the network. Your corporate network in your local office is an intranet. You probably have IT people working hard to make sure its up and as fast as they can make it.

Mark Cuban: Why am I the Only One Excited About Programming for HDTV?

Authored by Mark Cuban on July 9, 2007 - 3:30am.
Why is it that everyone is excited about programming every other medium, but I'm the only one excited about programming for HDTV? There are webisodes coming at us from every direction. Vuguru has done a great job with original programming for the web. Every cable and broadcast network it seems is doing companion programming on the web for their TV shows.

Mark Cuban: Why I Don't Trust Google and YouTube With a Copy of the World's Content

Authored by Mark Cuban on June 12, 2007 - 3:46pm.
First of all, I have to commend Google for finally trying to get in the game and protect content. At least it's nice to know that they have an interest in trying rather than just talking. Unfortunately for them, their approach puts them in a catch 22 situation and a position that hasn't worked all that well for them in the book publishing business.

Mark Cuban: Donald - Need a Job?

Authored by Mark Cuban on May 22, 2007 - 8:07am.
What in the world is Donald Trump going to do now? He "quit" The Apprentice after a 3 year run. His casinos once again are having troubles. He is at real risk of transitioning from THE Donald to, "you remember, THAT Donald". I actually feel sorry for the guy. Seriously, what could his future hold ? We live in a culture where celebrity out of the limelight is celebrity quickly forgotten. Its a peril for those whose only skill is being a celebrity and I'm sad to say, I think Donald Trump has fallen from businessperson who goes back to work as some of us are, into the category of celebrity without a TV show.

YouTube's Chad Hurley and HDNet's Mark Cuban on Copyrights

Authored by Jay Baage on May 11, 2007 - 10:32pm.
Updated - More videos added. YouTube CEO and co-founder Chad Hurley and HDNet co-founder Mark Cuban made the trek up to Capitol Hill this week to tell the members of the House subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet about how they see the future of video taking shape. Not surprisingly, they were asked about their views on copyright issues in a digital age and user generated content. Here are a few highlights from CSPAN put together by the 463 blog.

Mark Cuban: Yahoo and Comcast made the Deal of the Year

Authored by Mark Cuban on May 1, 2007 - 12:16pm.
Little has been written about yesterdays announcement that Yahoo would be selling display and video ads for Comcast's websites, in particular, Comcast.net. What's so special about this deal beyond the shear size of Comcast and the inventory it makes available to Yahoo to sell? It's the network stupid. The one thing that Google doesn't have is a contained network. Comcast does. The implications are significant.

Mark Cuban, Christine Hefner Lead List of Possible Chicago Cubs Acquirers

Authored by Scott Goldberg on April 2, 2007 - 10:41am.
Mark Cuban buying Cubs? Rich Walden, head of sports financing for JP Morgan Chase, said on CNBC today that Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and HDNet, and Christine Hefner, chairman and CEO of Playboy, are among a short list of potential acquirers of the Chicago Cubs.  The Tribune Co. has said it will sell the Cubs at the end of the year.  Early estimates place a $600 million price tag on the organization.

Mark Cuban: Why I decided to Supoena Google and YouTube

Authored by Mark Cuban on March 8, 2007 - 10:36pm.
This past week I decided to supoena Google to get the names of users that were uploading copies of our movies. I have no intention of pulling an RIAA and suing the users. I do have every attention of sending supoenas early and often to get the names and emails of users uploading our content they have pirated. Why? To learn.

Mark Cuban: It Could Take Five Years or More Before the Networks Fully Adopt HDTV

Authored by Mark Cuban on February 25, 2007 - 4:40pm.
Movies are shot knowing or hoping they are going to be seen by an audience, in a theater, watching on a very big screen. Even though over the life time of any film, more people will see it on a 4x3 TV screen than in a theater, the theatrical release drives all the downstream business. So its understandable that a movie will be shot to tell a story using every bit of the big screen and great sound available in theaters today.
