HitReport: U.S. Bundled Services Revenue to Hit $119.5 Billion by 2010Authored by Mark Hefflinger on February 2, 2006 - 7:18am.
Dallas - U.S. annual revenue from bundled services -- where providers offer a combination of TV, high-speed Internet, and landline and wireless phone services -- are projected to reach $119.5 billion by 2010, according to a report from market research firm Parks Associates. Currently, 39% of U.S. broadband households subscribe to a bundled service, with the majority combining two services; by the end of 2010, the firm forecasts that 55% of broadband households will subscribe to combinations of three or four services. "Although bundled services are at an early stage, service providers are beginning to experience increased customer retention," said Parks Associates analyst Deepa Iyer. "Simply touting 'one bill' and bundled discounts will not realize the full potential of bundled services. Service providers need to integrate different service features in a seamless way and build 'experience-oriented' packages that fit the distinctive needs and lifestyles of various consumer segments."
Report: MP3 Player Market to Hit 104 Million Units in 2009Authored by Mark Hefflinger on June 22, 2005 - 8:27am.
Scottsdale, Ariz. -- The MP3 player market is poised to grow from 27.8 million units shipped in 2004 to 104 million by 2009, driven by falling prices, more legitimate digital music services, smaller hard drives and increased flash memory storage capacity, according to a report from market research firm In-Stat. Combined revenue for hard drive- and flash memory-based MP3 players reached $4.5 billion in 2004, up nearly 200% from 2003. Meanwhile, U.S. households owning a digital music player have grown from 16% in 2001 to 25% in 2005. In-Stat noted that Apple currently holds 30% market share for combined sales of hard drive and flash memory MP3 players. It also predicts that flash memory players with 1GB or greater capacities will make up 20% of that market by the end of this year. "As competition heats up, vendors are striving to differentiate products by offering a wide range of price points, memory capacities, and features," said In-Stat analyst Stephanie Guza.
Report: Video Game Ad Revenue to Hit $260 Million by 2008Authored by Mark Hefflinger on October 18, 2004 - 9:43am.
Boston -- Video games will generate nearly $260 million in advertising revenue by 2008, with $92 million coming from in-game ads and $168 million from advergaming, according to a report from Boston-based market research firm Yankee Group. The group projects that 126 million U.S. gamers will spend $8.3 billion on video games in 2008. "Surprisingly, given the size of this market, video games have largely been ignored as a platform for advertising," said Yankee Group senior analyst Michael Goodman. "In 2003, marketers spent a paltry $79 million on in-game ads and advergaming. That is about to change as advertisers realize video games are effective platforms for reaching consumers with their marketing messages."
Report: Global Online Games Revenue to Hit $9.8 Billion in 2009Authored by Mark Hefflinger on August 4, 2004 - 3:41am.
San Diego -- The world market for online games will reach $9.8 billion in 2009, a 410% increase over 2003 revenue of $1.9 billion, according to a report from San Diego-based market research firm DFC Intelligence. The Asia-Pacific region will account for $4.2 billion of this total, with China and Japan expected to be the fastest growing countries for online games overall. "At the end of 2003 an estimated 81 million households worldwide had broadband. By 2009 we forecast that number reaching 228 million. It has been proven that the availability of broadband significantly increases online game usage," said DFC analyst David Cole. While noting that online games are still an immature business, DFC said that many potential viable business models are emerging, including advertising, tiered subscription, downloads and pay-per-play.
Report: World Cable Broadband Subscribers to Hit 69.4 Million by 2008Authored by Mark Hefflinger on July 28, 2004 - 4:17am.
Paris -- Cable modem service subscriptions worldwide are set to boom from 32.9 million to 69.4 million by 2008, according to a new report released by market analysis firm IDC. Although cable Internet is making considerable gains on other Internet connections, DSL remains the connection of choice everywhere in the world except the U.S., where cable is still the most popular connection. To maintain such steady growth, cable operators must continue to bundle video and voice services with other cable modem Internet access products, IDC said. "The push is on, and operators are aggressively marketing broadband services to both residential and business customers," said Amy Harris, manager of IDC's Broadband Markets and Technologies service.
Report: European Broadband Penetration to Hit 40% by 2008Authored by Mark Hefflinger on May 24, 2004 - 7:35am.
London -- A new study by analysis firm Yankee Group predicts that broadband penetration in Western Europe will reach 40% by the year 2008. The report singled out 2003 as the watershed year for broadband in Europe, saying that four developments last year transformed the entire market. First, most operators introduced entry-level tariffs to maintain their customer base and market share. Second, massive marketing campaigns delivered the message of speed and convenience to Internet users. Third, many service providers made the first serious efforts to establish new revenue sources for broadband. Fourth, and perhaps most important, competition has heated up in most countries. The Yankee Group said that in some European countries -- such as Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden -- more than half of all households will be connected. Even so, the decline in ARPU (average revenue per user) will pressure ISPs to control costs tightly and find new sources of revenue in the broadband market.
Report: Global Digital Video Recorder Revenues to Hit $5.6 Billion by 2008Authored by Mark Hefflinger on March 17, 2004 - 5:12am.
London -- Over 2.7 million digital video recorders were sold worldwide in 2003, an annual sales figure expected to grow to 27.6 million by 2008, when the market will support annual revenues of $5.6 billion, according to projections from market research firm Strategy Analytics. A market share breakdown by manufacturer shows that Scientific-Atlanta increased its share of the digital video recorder market to 25% last year, equal to satellite TV provider EchoStar (25%) and ahead of Pace Micro Technology (10%), Hughes Network Systems (10%) and Motorola (7%). The firm indicated that other firms like Sony, Samsung, Pioneer and Philips must "improve their focus with service providers if they are to make any impression on this rapidly growing market." A total of 71.5 million digital video recorders are projected to be in use worldwide by 2008.
Report: Online Advertising in Europe Set to Hit $1.2 Billion in 2005Authored by Mark Hefflinger on November 25, 2003 - 6:54am.
London -- Online advertising will top $1.2 billion across Europe in 2005 as marketers increase their use of the Internet, according to a new report from Forrester Research. The report acknowledges that traditional methods of advertising, such as television commercials, newspaper ads and poster hoardings, still command the biggest slice of advertising budgets, but says that online advertising is the fastest growing medium. Online display spending -- which includes banner ads and sponsorships but not job ads -- will increase this year by 12.5% to $943 million, and by 2008 will have almost doubled to reach $1.67 billion.
