Electronics Firms Partner on Wireless HD Standard

Santa Clara, Calif. - A consortium of consumer electronics and wireless technology developers -- including Sony (NYSE: SNE) and Samsung -- announced on Wednesday that they have partnered to jointly develop a new industry standard for wireless high-definition video. The WHDI (Wireless Home Digital Interface), a technology developed by Israel-based Amimon that includes a video-modem that operates in the 5GHz unlicensed band, will form the basis of the standard, which the companies hope to complete yet this year.

Hitachi to Release $2,000 Blu-ray Recorder in Japan This Year

Tokyo - Japanese consumer electronics firm Hitachi has announced plans to release the first Blu-ray camcorder, Wired News reported. Slated to ship only in Japan later this year, the $2,000 device will capture images in 1080p and support 8-centimeter Blu-ray discs, in addition to DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW.

Japanese Electronics Giants Partner to Develop Internet TVs

Tokyo - A group of Japanese consumer electronics firms that includes Matsushita, Sony, Sharp, Toshiba and Hitachi have announced plans to develop a joint standard for Internet-based televisions, the Associated Press reported.

Hitachi Introduces First Terabyte Digital Video Recorder

Tokyo -- Japanese consumer electronics firm Hitachi on Wednesday introduced the industry's first digital video recorder to feature a terabyte (1,000 GB) of storage capacity -- enough to handle 128 hours of high-definition video. Hitachi will also release 160GB, 250GB and 500GB models, which along with the terabyte model will all additionally feature a DVD recorder. Hitachi will sell the 160GB recorder for about $1,180 in Japan beginning next month, while the terabyte model will be priced at $2,080.

Hitachi to Increase Production of Microdrive Used in Portable Music Players

San Jose, Calif. -- Japanese electronics firm Hitachi's Global Storage Technologies unit announced on Monday that it will increase production of its 4GB Microdrive product, the miniature hard disk drive used in digital music players like Apple's iPod Mini, as well as digital cameras, PDAs and other devices. The company's Thailand plant will begin producing 2 million drives per quarter, up from the current 200,000, as a result of shortages that led Apple to delay the global sales launch for the iPod Mini.

Hitachi and Mitsubishi Launch European Joint Venture

London -- Hitachi and Mitsubishi Electronics on Tuesday launched a joint venture called Renesas Technology Europe. The new company will focus on the design and manufacture of semiconductor system solutions for the mobile, network, and automotive industries, digital home electronics and industrial markets. Renesas Technology Europe will be headquartered in Maidenhead in the U.K., with major centers in Dusseldorf and Munich in Germany. Matthew Trowbridge, formerly executive general manager of Hitachi Europe's Electronic Components Group, has been appointed CEO of the new company.
