Analysis: Brit Awards, MySpace and The Top New Bands in the UK

The Brit Awards take place tomorrow evening and there are three awards up for the public vote: best British Breakthrough Act, best British Live Act, and best British Single. The latter is tricky to analyze using search data, but I thought I’d have a look at the first two. The chart below illustrates weekly UK Internet searches for the five acts nominated for British Breakthrough Act in the weeks since the nominations were announced.

Yahoo! Search attracts a younger audience than Google. I promised a post with figures to back up my claim (sorry I am a day late - forgot it was Valentine's Day!). The following charts show the percentage of visits from each age group to Yahoo! Search and Google.com.

The following table shows the ranking of the candidate websites within the Lifestyle - Politics category in Iowa and New Hampshire based on volume of traffic from each state. I've included all candidates that show up among the top 100 Politics websites based on traffic from each state in the past four weeks.

We’ve just completed our latest hot gadget list and, given the amount of coverage they have received, I wasn’t surprised to see that the Nintendo Wii is currently the most searched for console in the UK, nor that the iPhone now accounts for one third of all searches for a specific mobile phone. However, one gadget that has crept up slowly without a huge amount of fanfare is the digital photo frame – those small LCD photo frames that show digital photos either via a USB connection or memory card slot. In fact, they are now so popular that last week searches for them overtook searches for cameras – digital or otherwise.

Guitar Hero 3 launched 28th October and has since garnered $115 million for Activision whose chairman today revealed that Activision has shipped more of the Guitar Hero 3 game than any other in its history. In short order Guitar Hero 3 became the most searched for video game based on share of US Internet searches.

Analysis: Facebook's Dip Over The Last Two Months Is Seasonal

I've seen several posts circulating in the blogosphere postulating on the demise of Facebook given a drop in the sites traffic over August and September of this year. My immediate reaction was to turn to Hitwise data and provide a little more granularity to provide insight to the question of Facebook slowdown v. seasonality (my hypothesis on the recent drop in traffic).

Buzz Watch: Deal or No Deal Most Popular TV Show Online

Televised game shows and live competitions with interactive elements have a particular appeal online. The NBC show "Deal or No Deal" managed to capture the most traffic to television show web sites during the important premiere week at the end of September, followed by ABC's "Dancing With The Stars."

Hitwise: Searches for 'Fantasy Football' up 94% on Last Year

English Football FansAfter a 3 month summer break the English Premier League kicked off on Saturday, and last week Hitwise revealed that Liverpool FC's official website was the most visited club website in the UK. With football fever back in full swing, more fans than ever are getting into the spirit by creating their own online fantasy teams. Searches for the term 'fantasy football' were up by 94% last week compared to the first week of the Premiership season last year.

Buzz Watch: US Searches For iPhone Up 583 Percent, Pogue Reviews

The buzz about the iPhone is deafening. It seems like every blog is writing about it (including this one). One measure of the significant public interest in the iPhone is that the volume of US searches for the term “iphone” increased 583 percent in the past four weeks leading up to the June 29 launch date, according to Hitwise. Despite innovations in online maps, UK consumer demand for online maps has not grown in the past year. As reported in my Site Seeing column in today's Guardian, Multimap remains the #1 Maps website, based on share of UK visits, with most of its traffic coming from store locator services. Google Maps is #2, having overtaken Streetmap.co.uk and The AA’s Travelwatch in March.

Today we released the Hitwise US News and Media Report, which examines trends in online news consumption over the past year. One of the most striking trends over the past year has been the increase in traffic from News & Media websites to video websites. The share of traffic leaving News and Media websites and going directly to Entertainment - Multimedia websites increased by 196% from April 2006 to March 2007.

Analysis: Apple Traffic up 34%, iPhone Attracts Young Users

In light of Apple's earnings announcement later today, here are some traffic numbers: the market share of visits to Apple.com was up 34% from March 2006 to March 2007. Keyword breadth (the number of keyword phrases containing a term) for 'ipod,' which is a great measure of brand popularity, was up by 18% for the 12 weeks ending March 31, 2007 versus the 12 weeks ending April 1, 2006.

Millennials Conference: What are 18-24 Year Olds Doing Online?

Yesterday I spoke at the the Millennials Conference in Los Angeles. I talked about some websites that have a high concentration of users in the 18-24 age group, and are enabling users to share content beyond the usual activities on social networking sites. 18-24 year-olds make up 19% of the adult online population, and based upon their website preferences, are much more interested in creating and sharing content than the average online user.

Experian Group Acquires Website Ratings, Marketing Firm Hitwise

London - Experian Group, an Ireland-based provider of analytical and information services to organizations and consumers, announced on Thursday that it has acquired Hitwise, a website ratings and marketing information firm, for about $240 million in cash.

Report: Web 2.0 Sites Drawing Many Viewers, Few Uploaders

San Francisco - While traffic to "Web 2.0" sites -- like YouTube, Flickr and others that encourage users to upload their own media -- has increased dramatically, the percentage of these users actually contributing content to such sites remains slim, according to a new study from website ratings firm Hitwise.

Analysis: Photobucket Accounts for 73% of MySpace's Photo Traffic

On Wednesday, April 11, MySpace blocked videos and slideshows hosted by Photobucket from appearing on the site due to an apparent violation of the MySpace terms of Service agreement. Did this blockage have any effect on Photobucket's traffic, and how much traffic do the two sites share?

Yesterday's press release covered how Google's share of executed searches was 64% in March 2007, an increase of 10% versus March 2006. Here at Hitwise have seen search engines, and Google in particular, become a more important source of traffic for many websites and industry categories.
