MySpace to Acquire imeem Music Streaming Service

Los Angeles - News Corp.'s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace has agreed to acquire streaming music service imeem for an undisclosed sum, although sources told CNET News.com that the deal is valued at about $8 million. The deal reportedly includes a payment of $1 million in cash, as well as earn outs and accounts receivable.

Founded in 2003, San Francisco-based imeem started off as a music-focused social network application, but later shifted focus to concentrate on music streaming.

Google Debuts Music Search Feature with Lala, iLike

Mountain View, Calif. - Google (NASD: GOOG) announced on Wednesday the launch of a new music-focused search feature, "OneBox," which adds streaming songs via Lala and MySpace's (NYSE: NWS) iLike, along with links to an artist's website. Along with Lala and iLike, Google will also include links to digital music services Pandora, imeem and Rhapsody (NASD: RNWK). The feature will in many cases allow users to listen to the full song they are searching for right there from the search results page; licensing issues mean that some songs will only feature 30-second samples, and that subsequent searches after a song is streamed in full once will only provide a 30-second sample.

Los Angeles - Music-focused online social network Imeem is laying off 25% of its 80-person staff, and has hired the investment bank Montgomery and Co. to explore a possible sale of the company, PaidContent reports. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company confirmed layoffs for Silicon Alley Insider, but would not comment on the sale rumor.

Los Angeles - A number of social media services on Tuesday announced the release of applications designed for Android, the mobile phone operating system developed by Google, including social music service Imeem, music identification service Shazam, and the MySpace (NYSE: NWS) social network. Both Imeem and Shazam said their mobile music services will allow users to tag songs they hear for purchase via the Amazon MP3 store. The MySpace application for Android also integrates Shazam, meaning that MySpace Mobile users on Android-powered phones can hold them up to speakers and have the song being played identified automatically.

San Francisco - Music-focused social network imeem said on Friday that it has partnered with Capitol/EMI to let its users stream the entire two-disc, 30-song special edition of "Radiohead: The Best Of," as well as every music video from "Radiohead: The Best Of DVD" for free prior to their North American release on June 3. The site, which claims 24 million unique monthly users, said fans will also be able to create and share custom Radiohead music and video playlists to embed on blogs or other social network profiles.

San Francisco - JamBase, a provider of live music concert listings and ticketing information, said on Wednesday that imeem and Fuzz.com will carry its live show information. Culled from a mix of user-generated listings and information from booking agencies, venues and labels, the JamBase database includes 50,000 listings from 40,000 artists.
